Not only is today Nico Hischier’s season debut, he will also be making his debut as the 12th captain in New Jersey Devils team history. Hischier is the first Devils forward to be named captain since Zach Parise in the 2011-2012 season. Currently, Hischier is the youngest captain in the National Hockey League at 22 years old and 47 days. He is the second youngest captain in Devils history (Kirk Muller, 21 years and 243 days old). Nico Hischier also becomes the second Swiss-born player to be a captain in the NHL alongside Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators. Today will be Hischier’s season debut after missing the first 11 games of the New Jersey Devils season.
Announcement from the New Jersey Devils
My reaction:
Since I’ve been covering the Devils and watching Nico Hischier’s development, it’s no surprise to me he has been named the 12th captain in Devils history. Hischier plays the game the right way as he plays a full 200 foot game. If you need him to score goals he can. Need Hischier to be a playmaker? He can do it! Play against the top lines and best players the NHL has to offer? He certainly has proven he belongs amongst the best. Hischier’s all around game and his leadership qualities are the right mix needed to be a captain and face of the franchise as a former number one overall pick back in 2017. Congrats Nico Hischier!
