Buffalo Sabres (4-6-2 10pts) v. Washington Capitals (7-4-3 17pts)
Back at home the Washington Capitals would play host to the Buffalo Sabres. In the first period it would be a rather quiet period with the exception of two posts for the Sabres. However, late in the period William Borgen would get called for slashing and the Caps would strike as Nicklas Backstrom would bank in an Alex Ovechkin rebound to give the Caps the 1-0 lead.
In the second period it would be a relative quiet period once again on the scoreboard, but this period would see more scoring chances for both teams. Midway through the period TJ Oshie would be called for high sticking, and it would be the Capitals taking advantage of the Sabres man advantage as Tom Wilson would power his way to the puck and come in on Linus Ullmark to strike for the Caps first shorthanded goal of the season to grow the Caps lead to two.
Come the third period the Capitals would start the period with the momentum, and a tally from Conor Sheary would grow the Caps lead to three. However, Dmitry Orlov would get called for tripping, and with nine seconds left in the powerplay Victor Olofsson would end Vitek Vanecek’s shutout bid with a beautiful snipe over the shoulder and under the bar to cut the Caps lead to two. The Sabres would pull Ullmark to help apply pressure to try to tie the game, but the Capitals would hold on for the 3-1 victory.
