Game Recaps

  • Washington Capitals v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 12p ET
    • In Pittsburgh for the first NBC Sunday matinee of the season, the Washington Capitals looked to keep their winning ways going against the Penguins. In the first period Evan Rodrigues would strike 19 seconds into the game to give the Penguins the quick 1-0 lead. Then later in the period Nic Dowd would get a squeaker past Casey DeSmith to tie the game, and would later be followed up by Alex Ovechkin’s first of the season to give the Caps the 2-1 lead. Then in the second period Colton Sceviour would score a goal that would need to be reviewed to see if the puck really went in to tie the game, but Nicklas Backstrom would strike on the powerplay to retake the lead for the Caps. However, Marcu Pettersson would score to tie the game at three for the Pens and after a scoreless third period and overtime frame would require the shootout. In the shootout it would be Jake Guentzel in the fourth round to score and give the Pens their first victory of the season.

  • Dallas Stars v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET
    • Postponed
  • Chicago Blackhawks v. Florida Panthers – 7p ET
    • In Florida the Panthers get to kick start their season as the host the Chicago Blackhawks. After a scoreless first period Aaron Ekblad and Keith Yandle would both score to give Florida the 2-0 lead, but later in the period while on the powerplay Alex DeBrincat would strike to get the Blackhawks on the board and back within one. Then in the third period Connor Murphy would score to tie the game at two, but goals from Eetu Luostarinen (first career NHL goal) and Patric Hornqvist (first goal as a Panther) would regain the two goal lead for the Panthers. Then on the late powerplay Jonathan Huberdeau would close things out as the Panthers would win their season opener 5-2 over the Blackhawks.
