AwesomeMania News and Notes for the Week of March 16th *NSFW*

Welcome to the AwesomeMania Weekly News and Notes Recap where Ben and Michael discuss the News and Notes across the wrestling world.

Interesting Ideas for HOF, Takeover, and Raw and SmackDown

https://wrestlingnews.co/wwe-news/interesting-idea-being-considered-for-nxt-takeover-and-wwe-hall-of-fame-potential-plans-for-raw-smacdown-tapings/amp/

Ben: not sure about the others, but I know that Georgia Smith, Daughter to this years inductee “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, tweeted that WWE were contemplating moving the HOF to summerslam weekend, which I think will be an excellent fit. Takeover? Not sure what is gonna happen there, but the Lads and Lasses of NXt deserve to have their moments.

Michael: I love the idea of SummerSlam for the Hall of Fame this year. It’s especially fitting for the British Bulldog too. As for Takeover Tampa Bay, yeah, that’s tough and in full agreement with you Ben. the men and women of NXT deserve to be showcased and the matches will be straight up fire escpecially with the matches that are being built up between Tommaso Ciampa/Jonathan Q Wrestling Gargano and Adam Cole/Velveteen Dream.

Alberto del Rio returning to WWE?

https://lordsofpain.net/alberto-del-rio-possibly-returning-to-wwe-soon/

Ben: Fuck.

Michael: LOL!! Thankfully since this report came out earlier in the week it has also been disputed as it’s now being reported that del Rio is more speaking out of his ass on this one. Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT reported that Triple H, nor anyone else from WWE, did not reach out to del Rio about a return. Let’s keep it that way.

CM Punk names people he’d come back to wrestle

https://lordsofpain.net/cm-punk-names-daniel-bryan-john-cena-rey-mysterio-and-will-ospreay-as-guys-that-could-get-him-return-to-wrestle/

Ben: Yes please, to all of those. Very yes. Also Sami Zayn and Kevin Ownes plz. Yes. All of that.

Michael: I remember this past fall having a conversation with my friend Danny Mays about this very topic and obviously the big craze was Seth Rollins, who is still politicking for the match as we speak, and I mentioned that Daniel Bryan would be the best person to have Punk’s first match with. A. It would be amazing. B. It’s someone that we know can carry Punk in his first match back. And C. The storytelling would be so amazing. Punk could literally claim that Bryan’s success was simply because of him making Bryan the heel in this one, because no one would boo Punk in his return. It simply writes itself. Oh, and then there’s this…

Daniel Bryan retiring from Full Time wrestling soon.

Ben: Good. I still shiver when I see him taking bumps. This is best for him and his family.

Michael: I’m also in agreement with this. We’ll still see him wrestle on a part time basis, like we’re getting with Edge now, but whether it’ll be in WWE or elsewhere after his contract expires later this year remains to be seen.

WrestleMania to be two nights!

Backstage News on why WWE has no audience, but AEW does.

https://lordsofpain.net/why-wwe-hasnt-used-employees-in-the-crowd-at-performance-center-tv-shows/

Ben: The first SmackDown from the PC was a revelation of what a show could be if you let performers off the leash. Raw.. Raw sucked. If it hadn’t been for Edge opening the show, even Byron getting kicked in the Nards couldn’t save that show. We’ve had one Dynamite under the new isolation rules, and while it was a good show, I felt having some of the performers ringside (namely Jake, Tully, Arn etc..) felt a bit reckless. Not really social distancing. Not saying it didn’t make for an interesting atmosphere, just a bit against protocol. And No Jerry Lawler, piping in crowd noise won’t help.

Michael: Piping in crowd noise would make things more awkward honestly, but I do agree about last week’s SmackDown as it was an extremely fun episode to watch and as we discussed on the podcast these past two episodes it was the best episode of SmackDown since NXT took over the show. As for Raw, it was just Edge. That’s it. And no wrestling on NXT was a missed opportunity there. Don’t get me wrong, amazing interviews and segments to help push storylines, but the fact there was no wrestling on the show made it undesirable. As for Dynamite, it was an interesting idea, and I know people online enjoyed it, but I agree with Ben, it was a bit reckless on AEW’s part there. WWE obviously isn’t going to do it, and rightfully so because they were told by the local government that they cannot have anyone in the crowd. AEW, not sure what’s going on there.

Mania to be taped?

Ben: CALLED IT!!

Okay in all seriousness, I spoke on our roundtable how phenomenal it would be if the pre-taped Mania and edited it like an action movie. Now we can have like a full on Saturday night cliff hanger. I mean I know they are just gonna tape it like a Raw or a SmackDown.. But.. WHAT COULD BE! Also cancelling the ARMBAR and WOMBAT just makes sense.

Michael: I’m interested in seeing the concept of what they’re going to do since it’s being reported that other locations will be used to film Mania.

Lesnar, Roode, and others impacted by Canadian border being closed.

https://www.wrestlinginc.com/news/2020/03/brock-lesnar-other-wwe-stars-to-be-affected-by-us-canada-668111/

Ben: Lets be fair here. ONE of these names is a loss. The others are Bobby Roode and the Singhs. Roode was speculated to be in a 6 man tag (again, how they fucked up the Otis story is beyond me) and who knows if the Singhs would even get booked? Brock being missing not only robs the WWE of a vital marketing tool, it robs Drew McIntyre of his moment, a moment that has been far too long in coming. Poor freaking Drew; the one time Brock wants to come to work, he can’t.

Michael: I agree about the Singhs. No idea what they could have been used for outside of the ARMBAR or something with the 24/7 title, and for Roode with the Otis storyline (which took a semi-interesting turn last night on SmackDown), but yeah. Lesnar is a major problem. Drew has been busting his ass off since getting released from WWE to make it back to the WWE and get to where he is today, and to have this with the Canadian borders closing due to COVID-19 really sucks. Hopefully this can get figured out.

Jeff Hardy gets his music back!!

https://www.cagesideseats.com/wwe/2020/3/20/21188430/jeff-hardy-no-more-words-theme-returns-wwe

Michael: Ok, full disclosure this is simply for me, but OH HELL YES!!! I love “No More Words” and the fact Jeff gets to use it again is a great thing as it’ll allow him to separate to his new singles run and not be tied to the Hardy Boys music going forward. Also with Matt going to AEW it makes sense too as Matt’s last appearances in WWE were to the Hardy Boys music.
