NHL News and Notes from Saturday, February 29th, 2020
- The New York Islanders and the NHL announced that the Islanders will be playing the 2020 Playoffs and the entirety of the 2020-21 Regular Season and Playoffs at Nassau Coliseum.
- The Islanders have three games remaining at Barclay’s Center, and once they are done with those three games will be finished with the venue.
- The Tampa Bay Lightning announced that captain Steven Stamkos will have surgery on March 2nd to repair a core muscle injury and is anticipated to return in 6 to 8 weeks.
Boston Bruins v. New York Islanders – 1p EST Start Time
On Long Island the New York Islanders would honor Butch Goring with the retirement of his number 91, however, the Boston Bruins would rain on their party as David Pastrnak and Matt Grzelcyk would strike in the first period for the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period goals from Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy would give the Bruins the 4-0 victory.
New Jersey Devils v. Los Angeles Kings – 4p EST Start Time
The New Jersey Devils fall for the second consecutive game in overtime to the Los Angeles Kings 2-1.
Calgary Flames v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 4p EST Start Time
In Tampa Bay the Lightning would play host to the Calgary Flames. In the first period the Lightning would get the lone goal from Tyler Johnson on the powerplay to take the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Andrew Mangiapane and Elias Lindholm would score for the Flames, but goals from Ondrej Palat, Yanni Gourde, and Alex Killorn would score to give the Lightning the 4-2 lead. In the third period Sean Monahan would score for the Flames, but it would not be enough as the Lightning would hold on to win 4-3.
Chicago Blackhawks v. Florida Panthers – 6p EST Start Time
In Florida the Panthers would host the Chicago Blackhawks in a highly contested matchup. In regulation the Panthers would get goals from Mike Hoffman and Mike Matheson, and the Blackhawks would get goals from Jonathan Toews and Drake Caggiula to send the game to overtime tied at two. Then in the shootout PAtrick Kane would net the game winner as the Blackhawks take the 3-2 victory.
Colorado Avalanche v. Nashville Predators – 7p EST Start Time
In Nashville the Predators would host the Colorado Avalanche, and in the second period Gabriel Landeskog and Martin Kaut would score to give the Avalanche the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period Viktor Arvidsson would get the Predators on the board with his 15th of the season and Calle Jarnkrok would score, but Erik Johnson would score to give the Avalanche the 3-2 victory.
Vancouver Canucks v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p EST Start Time
For Hockey Night in Canada the Toronto Maple Leafs would play host to the Vancouver Canucks. In the first period Tyler Motte and Tanner Pearson would score for the Canucks, and Frederik Gauthier and Auston Matthews would tally for the Leafs. then after a scoreless second period Martin Marincin and Zach Hyman would score to give the Leafs the 4-2 victory.
Carolina Hurricanes v. Montreal Canadiens – 7p EST Start Time
In Montreal the Carolina Hurricanes would come to town to take on the Canadiens. In the first forty minutes The Canadiens would be dominate as while Hayden Fleury would score for the Hurricanes, goals from Phillip Danault, Max Domi, and Brendan Gallagher to take the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Joel Edmundson and Justin Williams would tally for the Hurricanesto tie the game at three to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame Jeff Petry would score to give the Canadiens the 4-3 victory.
Detroit Red Wings v. Ottawa Senators – 7p EST Start Time
In Ottawa the Senators would take on the Detroit Red Wings in a close contest. In regulation Artem Anisimov would net a pair of goals, and Scott Sabourin would score for Ottawa while Frans Nielsen, Dylan Larkin, and Sam Gagner would score for the Wings to force overtime. In the shootout it would be Anisimov to seal the deal as the Senators would win 4-3.
Dallas Stars v. St. Louis Blues – 8p EST Start Time
In St. Louis the Blues and Dallas Stars would face off, and in regulation Tyler Seguin, Denis Gurianov, and John Klingberg would score for the Stars, while David Perron, Tyler Bozak, and Brayden Schenn would score for the Blues as the game would go to overtime tied at three. Then in the shootout Ryan O’Reilly would score to give the Blues the 4-3 victory.
Buffalo Sabres v. Arizona Coyotes – 8p EST Start Time
In Arizona the Buffalo Sabres would get the jump on the Coyotes with goals from Marcus Johansson and Jeff Skinner to take the 2-0 lead. However, in the final forty minutes the Coyotes would get five unanswered goals from Joel Oesterle, Phil Kessel, Clayton Keller (two goals), and Olver Ekman-Larsson to take the 5-2 victory
Winnipeg Jets v. Edmonton Oilers – 10p EST Start Time
In Edmonton Leon Draisaitl would score in the first period to reach 100 points for the second season in a row, and give the Oilers the 1-0 lead. However, in the second period the Winnipeg Jets would get on the board with goals from Logan Shaw and Kyle Connor to take the 2-1 lead, but Draisaitl would strike again to tie the game at two. Then in the third period Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would strike to give the Oilers the 3-2 victory.
Pittsburgh Penguins v. San Jose Sharks – 1030p EST Start Time
In San Jose the Sharks would look to feast on the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, and in the first period Evander Kane would score to give the Sharks the 1-0 lead. In the second period Timo Meier and Joel Kellman would score to grow the Sharks lead to three. Then in the third period Logan Couture and Joe Thornton would score to give the Sharks the 5-0 victory.
