Washington Capitals (34-12-5 73pts) v. Ottawa Senators (18-23-9 45pts)
Game Recap:
The Washington Capitals head to the Capitol of Canada to take on the Ottawa Senators, and in the first period TJ Oshie would be the beneficiary of a beautiful John Carlson slap pass to tip the puck into the net for his 19th of the season and give the Capitals the 1-0 lead. Then the Capitals would get a powerplay opportunity when Thomas Chabot would be called for slashing, but the Capitals would not be able to capitalize. However, the Capitals would strike again as Evgeny Kuznetsov would strike for his 17th of the season to take the two goal lead into the first intermission.
In the second period the Capitalas would get two more powerplay opportunities to try to grow their lead, but after a failed first powerplay early in the period the Capitals would fail again and have their lead cut to one as Chris Tierney would score his 10th of the season while shorthanded to get the Senators on the board. The Capitals would regain the two goal lead with Alex Ovechkin’s 36th of the season to tie Mark Messier for eighth on the all time goal scoring list, but Thomas Chabot would strike 64 seconds later with a beautiful bullet past Ilya Samsonov to cut the Capitals lead back to one.
Then in the third period the Capitals would go shorthanded early in the period, but Carl Hagelin would strike to give the Capitals the two goal lead, but then on the next penalty kill the Senators would respond as Artem Anisimov would score on the powerplay to bring the Senators back within one. However, late in the period while on a four minute powerplay, the Senators would pull their goalie and force the play in the Capitals zone, but Ovechkin would net his second of the game on the powerplay to pass Messier for eighth all time in goals scored and give the Capitals the 5-3 victory.
