- The Nashville Predators have relieved Peter Laviolette of his head coaching duties, and Kevin McCarthy as assistant coach. The Predators will announce their replacement before they face off with the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, January 7th.
Edmonton Oilers v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p EST Start Time
In Toronto we would see a high scoring affair between the Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers. In the first period the Oilers would open up the scoring as Oscar Klefbom would net his fifth of the season to take the 1-0 lead. Theni nt he second period both teams would net three goals each as Jason Spezza, Frederik Gauthier, and Pierre Engvall would score for the Leafs, but goals from Darnell Nurse, Kailer Yamamoto, and Alex Chiasson would score to help the Oilers keep the one goal lead. Then in the third period the All Stars would strike as Auston Matthews would score for the Maple Leafs, but the duo of Leon Draisaitl (PPG) and Connor McDavid would score to give the Oilers the 6-4 victory.
Winnipeg Jets v. Montreal Canadiens – 7p EST Start Time
In Montreal forward Ilya Kovalchuk would make his Canadiens debut against the Winnipeg Jets. After a scoreless first period Josh Morrissey and Nikolaj Ehlers (SHG) would score for the Jets to take the 2-0 lead, but Ben Chiarot would strike for the Canadiens to bring them back within one. Then in the third period Chiarot would net his second of the game, with an assist by Kovalchuk, but Andrew Copp would score the game winner for the Jets and secure the 3-2 victory.
Colorado Avalanche v. New York Islanders – 7p EST Start Time
On Long Island the New York Islanders and Colorado Avalanche would play a highly contested contest as Anders Lee would score the lone goal in the third period to give the Islanders the 1-0 victory. Former Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov would stop all 32 shots he faced to clinch the shutout.
Columbus Blue Jackets v. Los Angeles Kings – 10p EST Start Time
In Los Angeles the Columbus Blue Jackets would start their road trip against the Kings. In the first period the Kings would strike first with an Alex Iafallo tally. Then in the second period Nathan Gerbe and Scott Harrington would score to give the Jackets the 2-1 lead. In the third period Trevor Lewis would score for the Kings, but goals from Kevin Stenlund and Gustav Nyquist would give the Blue Jackets the 4-2 victory.
