2020 World Juniors – Monday, December 30th, 2019

In International competition the IIHF World Junior Championships are underway in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic for Day Five of the tournament.

Kazakhstan Kazakhstan v. Sweden Sweden

For Sweden they would take on Kazakhstan to end the Preliminary Round, and in the first period Samuel Fagemo would strike to give Sweden the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Fagemo would score his second of the game to start off a four goal period that would also see Linus Oberg, Nils Hoglander, and Jonatan Berggren score to give the Swedes the 5-0 lead. However, before the end of the period Oleg Boiko would score for Kazakhstan. In the third period Lucas Raymond would score for the Swedes, and while Maxim Musorov would score for Kazakhstan, it would not be enough as the Swedes would hold on to win 6-2.

 

Germany Germany v. Canada Canada

In the other early morning matchup we would see Canada take on Germany. The Canadians would get goals from Nolan Foote, Liam Foudy, Calen Addison, and Ty Dellandrea to secure the 4-1 victory. Yannik Valenti would score the lone goal for the Germans.

 

Slovakia Slovakia v. Switzerland Switzerland

In the first afternoon game of the day we would see Slovakia take on Switzerland. In the first period the Swiss would take the 3-0 lead over the Slovaks as Gilian Kohler would score a pair of goals, and Valentin Nussbaumer would strike to take the three goal advantage. Then in the second period Simon Knak would score to grow the Swiss’ lead to four, but Martin Fasko-Rudas would break the the shutout bid for the Slovaks, however, Sandro Schmid would score to retake the four goal lead for the Swiss. Then in the third period Robert Dzugan would score for the Slovaks, but goals from Mika Henauer and Matthew Verboon would secure the 7-2 victory for Switzerland.

 

USA United States v. Czech Republic Czech Republic

In a tightly contested contest the United States would face the Czech Republic. In the first period Shane Pinto would strike to get the US on the board first, but back to back goals from Libor Zabransky would give the Czechs the 2-1 lead. Then in the second period Arthur Kaliyev and Jack Drury would strike for the Americans to take the 3-2 lead, and in the third period Petr Cajka would tie the game at three to send the game at overtime. In overtime Cole Caufield would strike to give the Americans the 4-3 overtime victory.
