NWHL Game Recap – 12/7/2019 – Boston Pride v. Metropolitan Riveters

Boston Pride (10-0-0 20pts) v. Metropolitan Riveters (2-5-0 4pts)

Game Recap:

For the first time since early October for their home opener, the Metropolitan Riveters have finally returned home for a matchup against the undefeated Boston Pride. In the first period both teams would get themselves into penalty trouble as Kate Leary of the Riveters would take a high sticking penalty, and during the powerplay Kaleigh Fratkin would be called for interference. During the 4 on 4 play the Riveters would get some solid chances, but Victoria Hanson would stand tall for the Pride. Then both teams would trade penalties once again as Fratkin would get called again this time for body checking, and then Mallory Rushton would end the Riveters powerplay with a slashing minor. After the second round of penalties would expire the Pride would do some crisp passing as McKenna Brand would pass the puck to Christina Putigna who was sitting right in the slot to roof it past Sam Walther to give the Pride the 1-0 lead. However, the Riveters would respond as Kendall Cornine would snip a shot past Hanson to tie the game at one. But the Pride would not back down as they would get another powerplay opportunity, but while they did not capitalize with it, they would strike shortly after it ended as Tori Sullivan notched her fifth of the season for the 2-1 Pride lead.

In the second period the Pride would take advantage of a missed opportunity by the Riveters as they would take advantage of the Riveters defense to create an odd woman rush and Jillian Dempsey would score her seventh of the season to grow the Pride’s lead to two. Then the Pride’s lead would grow to three as McKenna Brand would score her 12th of the season, but the Riveters would respond as Madison Packer would feed Kate Leary with the puck to cut the Pride’s lead back to two. However, Dempsey would strike again as her second of the game to give the Pride the 5-2 lead. Then Alyssa Wohlfeiler would net her fourth and fifth of the season to give the Pride their first four and five goal leads of the game, but the Riveters would get on the board with Kendall Cornine’s second of the game while shorthanded. The Pride would get the last say as Mary Parker would net her ninth of the season to give the Pride the 8-3 lead going into the intermission.

In the third period the Riveters would start with a 1:57 long powerplay to start the period, and Dana DeMartino would start the third for the Riveters as well. The Pride would continue to give themselves penalty troubles, but the Riveters would nullify their sixth opportunity with a penalty of their own. The remainder of the period would be a penalty filled game that would see a total of 36 combined penalty minutes as the Boston Pride would hold on to win 8-3 to remain undefeated.
