Game Recap – 12/6/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Anaheim Ducks

Washington Capitals (21-4-5 47pts) v. Anaheim Ducks 12-12-4 28pts)

Game Recap:

In their second and final matchup for the 2019-20 the season the Washington Capitals travel to Anaheim to take on the Ducks, and after their previous matchup in DC on November 18th all eyes were on Garnet Hathaway and Erik Gudbranson to see if their bad blood would boil over. However, in the first period we wouldn’t see any bad blood shown between these two teams as they both focused more on the hockey, than what happened in the past, and a great indicator was that was the Capitals hustle in the Ducks’ zone as Travis Boyd would score off a bad angle after receiving a beautiful pass from Carl Hagelin to take the 1-0 lead. Late in the period Hagelin would take an interference penalty, but the Capitals would hold the Ducks of the board to take their one goal lead into the intermission.

In the second period the Ducks would be caught with too many men on the ice early, and the with the powerplay opportunity the Capitals would get some chances, but would be sloppy at the same time as they were not able to capitalize on the opportunity. However, the Capitals would get another chance at the powerplay as Gudbranson would come after Hathaway and despite the linesman getting involved quickly to prevent the two from fighting, Hathaway and Gubranson would both get 10 minute misconducts, but Gudbranson would get an additional two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct for initiating the scuffle. While on their second powerplay opportunity the Capitals would strike this time around as Evgeny Kuznetsov would strike to grow the lead to two for the Capitals. After the powerplay goal, more fireworks would take place as Nicolas Deslauriers would challenge Radko Gudas to a fight and both would get five minutes each for fighting but Deslauriers would receive an additional ten minute misconduct. Then shortly after the Capitals would get another powerplay off a Cam Fowler high stick, but 30 seconds into it TJ Oshie would be called for cross checking to kill the powerplay for the Capitals. On the abbreviated powerplay for the Ducks Sam Steel would score for the Ducks, however, the Capitals would challenge the goal for offsides and win the challenge to keep the the 2-0 lead. However, the Ducks would eventually get on the board as Ryan Getzlaf would knock in the rebound in the slot to cut the Capitals lead to one.

Then in the third period the Ducks would only need 45 seconds to tie the game as Adam Henrique would score his ninth of the season to tie the game at two. However, the Ducks would misplay the puck in their own zone and Jakub Vrana would take advantage for his 15th of the season to retake the one goal lead for the Capitals. Then Gudbranson and Hathaway would finally get to drop the gloves with each other, and both would get majors for fighting. The rest of the period would get testy for both teams, but in the end the Capitals would hold on to win 3-2 over the Ducks.
