NWHL Draft Night 1 Recap

The NWHL draft night 1 has concluded on Twitter tonight. Let’s see who all was selected.

 

Round 1

1- Boston* (Acquired from Toronto) – F Samantha Davis, Boston University

Sammy Davis is from Pembroke, Massachusetts. She played 5 years of college hockey at Boston University, where she scored 66 goals and added 76 assists for 142 points, which is good for 6th all time in program history. She was captain of the team her last two years.

 

2 – Connecticut – F Kayla Friesen, Clarkson University

Kayla Friesen is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She played 4 years of college hockey at two different schools. She spent her first 3 years at St. Cloud State University, and her last year at Clarkson University. She tallied 50 points at St. Cloud State and added another 30 points at Clarkson University.

 

3 – Buffalo – G Carly Jackson, University of Maine

Carly Jackson is from Amherst, Nova Scotia. She played 5 years of college hockey at the University of Maine. In college, her GAA never got higher than 2.84. Her senior year, she posted a 1.90 GAA and a .934 save percentage.

 

4 – Metropolitan – D Saroya Tinker, Yale University

Saroya Tinker is from Oshawa, Ontario. The defender played 4 years of college hockey at Yale University. She scored 5 goals and added 27 assists for a total of 32 points in her college hockey career.

 

5 – Minnesota – F Alex Woken, University of Minnesota

Alex Woken is from Fargo, North Dakota. Woken played 4 years of college hockey at the University of Minnesota. She scored 38 goals and added 37 assists for a total of 75 points.

 

6 – Toronto* (Acquired from Boston) – F Jaycee Gebhard, Robert Morris University

Jaycee Gebhard is from Plenty, Saskatchewan. She played 4 years of college hockey at Robert Morris University. In her senior season, she was captain of the team. In her college career, she has tallied 74 goals and added 124 assists for a total of 199 points. She is the all time leading scorer in the University’s program.

Round 2

1 (7) – Connecticut – D Victoria Howran, University of New Hampshire

Victoria Howran is from Bancroft, Ontario. The defender played for 4 years of college hockey at the University of New Hampshire. She was the captain of the team in her senior year. She scored 7 goals and added 48 assists for a total of 55 points.

 

2 (8) – Toronto – F Amy Curlew, Cornell University

Amy Curlew is from Goose Bay, Newfoundland. She played 4 years of college hockey at Cornell University. In her college career, she scored 24 goals and added 36 assists for a total of 60 points.

 

3 (9) – Buffalo – D Codie Cross, Northeastern University

Codie Cross is from Airdrie, Alberta. The defender played 4 years of college hockey at Northeastern University. In her college career, she scored 12 goals and added 50 assists for a total of 62 points. In her senior season, she was a plus 27.

 

4 (10) – Metropolitan – F Delaney Belinskas, Boston College

Delaney Belinskas is from Port Orange, Florida. She played her college hockey at Boston College for 4 years. In her senior season, she was an assistant captain of the team. In her college career, she scored 49 goals and added 44 assists for a total of 93 points.

 

5 (11) – Minnesota – D Patti Marshall, University of Minnesota

Patti Marshall is from Thief River Falls, Minnesota. The defender played 4 years of college hockey at the University of Minnesota. In her senior season, she was captain of the team. In her 4 years, she scored 8 goals and added 53 assists for a total of 61 points.

 

6 (12) – Boston – F Tereza Vanisova, University of Maine

Tereza Vanisova is from Strakonice, Czech Republic. She played 4 years of college hockey at the University of Maine. In the 4 years, she has scored 63 goals and added 66 assists for a total of 129 points. She is the all time leading scorer in the program’s history.

Searching For Talent

With the announcement of the NWHL draft For Tuesday April 28th and Wednesday April 29th, it might be a good time to review some history of the draft. I’ve already detailed the fates of all the former first overall selections in the four draft classes. However, it might be high time to shine the light on the other notable players that were drafted in those years.

 

2015

Michelle Picard

Michelle Picard was drafted in round 2, #6 overall by the Connecticut Whale. The defender played 4 years of college at Harvard University. She never played a game for the Whale, instead she signed for the Riveters, where she played for 3 seasons. She is a member of the 2017-2018 Riveters that won the Isobel Cup that year.

 

Lexi Bender

Lexi Bender was drafted in the 3rd round, #11 overall by the Boston Pride. The defender played 4 years of college hockey at Boston College. She would play 4 seasons with the Boston Pride, and this past season, she put up big numbers, as she tallied 4 times and added 9 assists for 13 points on the year. She is set to play in the Isobel Cup finals, if and when play resumes.

 

Amanda Leveille

Amanda Leveille was drafted in the 3rd round as well, #12 overall by the Buffalo Beauts. The goalie played 4 years of college hockey, putting up rather impressive numbers at the University of Minnesota. In her first season with the Beauts, she became an Isobel Cup champion. Her next season with the Beauts, she would lead them back to the Cup finals but unfortunately was defeated by the Riveters that season. Her next year, she would leave the Beauts to play for the Minnesota Whitecaps, and would once again lead the team to the Isobel Cup final, where the Whitecaps would win the game in overtime against the Buffalo Beauts. This past season, she would re-sign with the Whitecaps, and once again lead the team to the Isobel Cup finals. If and when play resumes, she could potentially be the first 3 time Isobel Cup champion.

 

Miye D’Oench

Miye D’Oench was drafted in round 4, #15 overall by the Boston Pride. The forward played 4 years of college hockey at Harvard University. She would not play for the Boston Pride, instead opting to play for the Riveters, where she spent 3 seasons with them. She is a member of the 2017-2018 Isobel Cup winning team.

 

2016

Sydney Rossman

Sydney Rossman was drafted in round 5, #19 overall by the Connecticut Whale. The goalie played her 4 years of college hockey at Quinnipiac University, posting rather incredible numbers. Rossman was named the starter for the Whale, dressing for 16 games that season, before they were bounced by the champion Riveters. The next season, the Minnesota native would sign for the Whitecaps, and played largely a backup role behind Leveille. She is a member of the 2018-2019 Isobel Cup winning team.

 

2017

Sam Donovan

Sam Donovan was drafted by the Connecticut Whale in round 2, #5 overall. The forward played her college hockey at Brown University. Upon completion of her college hockey career, she played 2 games for the Whale and earned an assist. The Whale were bounced that year by the Riveters that season. She re-signed with the Whale, playing 5 games. After that season, the Minnesota native would sign with the Whitecaps, and she would get her first NWHL goal, against her former team, the Whale. If and when play resumes, she is set to possibly play in the Isobel Cup finals.

 

Mallory Souliotis

Mallory Souliotis was drafted by the Boston Pride in round 2, #8 overall. The defender played her college hockey at Yale University for 4 years. She would then play for the Boston Pride for the next 3 seasons. In this past season, she posted 4 goals and added 12 assists for 16 points on the year. If and when play resumes, she is set to play in the Isobel Cup finals.

 

McKenna Brand

McKenna Brand was selected #11 overall in round 3 by the Riveters. The forward played her college hockey at Northeastern University for 4 years. She never played for the Riveters, opting to sign for the Boston Pride, where she has played for the last 2 seasons. This past season, she tallied 19 times on the year, which leads the team. She would add 17 assists for a grand total of 36 points, which is good for 2nd behind Jillian Dempsey. If and when play resumes, she is set to play in the Isobel Cup finals. She has also re-signed to play with the Pride next season.

 

Lexie Laing

Lexie Laing was drafted in round 3, #12 overall by the Boston Pride. The forward played her college hockey at Harvard University for 5 years. She has so far played 1 season with the Boston Pride, tallying 12 goals and adding 15 asssists for 27 points on the year. If and when play resumes, she is set to play in the Isobel Cup finals. She has also re-signed to play with the Pride next season.

 

Nina Rodgers

Nina Rodgers was drafted by the Connecticut Whale in the 5th round, #17 overall. The forward played 4 years of college hockey. 2 years at the University of Minnesota, her other 2 years at Boston University. She would play 1 season with the Whale, playing 15 games and tallying 2 goals and adding 2 assists for 4 points on the year. The next season, the Minnesota native would sign with the Whitecaps. She has played 7 games with them, scoring 1 goal and adding 3 assists for 4 points on the year. If and when play resumes, she is set to possibly play in the Isobel Cup finals.

 

2018

Kendall Cornine

Kendall Cornine was drafted in round 2, #6 overall by the Metropolitan Riveters. The forwars would play 4 years of college hockey at RIT. She has so far played 1 season with the Metropolitan Riveters, where she scored 13 goals and added 11 assists for 24 points on the year. Marks which are good for being tied for second in goals and third on the team in scoring. She has re-signed to play with the Riveters next season.

 

Lovisa Selander

Lovisa Selander was drafted in the 4th round, #20 overall by the Boston Pride. The Swedish goalie played 4 years of college hockey at RPI. She so far has played 1 season with the Boston Pride, where she dressed for 18 games, and has a record of 17-1-0. She also has a GAA of 1.71 and a .941 save percentage, and 2 shutouts on the year. If and when play resumes, she is set to play in the Isobel Cup finals.

 

Cailey Hutchison

Cailey Hutchison was drafted in round 5, #21 overall by the Metropolitan Riveters. The forward played her 4 years of college hockey at the University of Maine. She so far has played 1 season with the Metropolitan Riveters, in which she tallied 3 goals and added 8 assists for a total of 11 points on the year. She has re-signed to play with the Riveters next season.

 

Nicole Schammel

Nicole Schammel was drafted in the 5th round, #23 overall by the Buffalo Beauts. Schammel, who is a forward, played 4 years of college hockey. She play 1 year at Minnesota State University, and her other 3 years at the University of Minnesota. She would not play a game for the Buffalo Beauts. Instead, the Minnesota native would play for the Minnesota Whitecaps. Where she would record 11 goals and add 14 assists for 25 points on the season, which is good for 4th on the team. If and when play resumes, she is set to play in the Isobel Cup finals.

 

Jenna Rheault

Jenna Rheault was drafted in the 5th round, #25 overall by the Boston Pride. Rheault, a defender, played her 4 years of college hockey at the University of New Hampshire. She so far has played 1 season with the Boston Pride, in which she has tallied 1 goal and added 5 assists for 6 points on the year. She also boasts being a plus 14 in the plus minus category. If and when play resumes, she is set to play in the Isobel Cup finals.

 

Talent can be found anywhere in the draft, in any round. Looking forward to seeing the next crop of talented college hockey players get selected in the draft and find out where they are going to play in the season upcoming.

Going Number 1

The NWHL announced on Thursday that they are having their draft this week on April 28th and April 29th on Twitter. It’s been since 2018 since the last time the NWHL had a draft. Let’s take a look at the previous number 1 overall selections.

 

2015 #1 Overall Pick Alex Carpenter

The first overall pick in the 2015 NWHL draft belonged to the Metropolitan Riveters, and they selected forward Alex Carpenter from North Reading, MA. Carpenter played her college hockey at Boston College, where she played for 4 years. She would not play a game for the Riveters, however she did play a year in the NWHL for the Boston Pride. In the 17 games she played for the Pride, she scored 9 goals and added 20 assists for 29 points. She led the team in assists and was 2nd on the team in points, behind Brianna Decker. She would leave the NWHL for the CWHL and would play for the Kunlun Red Star. Later, the team would be renamed Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays, where she would play her second season in the CWHL. Upon the closure of the CWHL, the Vanke Rays would join the Russian league, where she currently plays.

 

2016 #1 Overall Pick Kelsey Koelzer

The first overall pick in the 2016 NWHL draft once again belonged to the New York Riveters, and they selected defender Kelsey Koelzer from Horsham, PA. Koelzer played 4 years of college hockey at Princeton University, and would join the NWHL after college. She would play for the Metropolitan Riveters, where she would be on the team for 3 seasons. She was a member of the 2017-2018 Metropolitan Riveters who won the Isobel Cup that year. Her last season in the NWHL was 2018-2019 where she would play 14 games for the Riveters and did not register a point, but was stellar on the back end for the Riveters before they were bounced by the Whitecaps in the playoffs. Currently she is a member of the PWHPA for the Tri-State roster.

 

2017 #1 Overall Pick Kaitlin Burt

The first overall pick for the 2017 NWHL draft belonged to the Boston Pride, where they would select goalie Kaitlin Burt. Burt, who hails from Lynn, MA played 4 years of college hockey at Boston College. After college, she would play 1 season in the NWHL for the Boston Pride. She would play 16 games for the Pride and would record a 2.26 GAA and a .920 Save Percentage. She was named an NWHL All Star that season, which was played in Nashville, TN. Currently, Burt is a member of the PWHPA as a member of the New England roster.

 

2018 #1 Overall Pick Annie Pankowski

The first overall pick in the 2018 NWHL draft once again belonged to the Metropolitan Riveters. With that pick, they would select Annie Pankowski from Laguna Hills, CA. Pankowski played 4 years of college hockey at the University of Wisconsin. Pankowski never played a game for the Riveters. Currently, she is a member of the PWHPA as a member of the Minnesota roster.

NWHL News – Shot Blocking Queen Returns to Buffalo

 

Today in the NWHL, they announced another player signing for next season.

 

Shot Blocking Queen Returns to Buffalo

  • Defender Marie-Jo Pelletier has re-signed with the Buffalo Beauts for the 2020-21 NWHL season.

  • In her rookie season with the Beauts Pelletier scored six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in 24 regular season games.
  • Pelletier would be a finalist for the 2020 NWHL Newcomer of the Year, and would earn NWHL All Star honors and was named one of the NWHL Three Stars of the Season as voted by the fans.

 

Ivo Back Behind the Bench

  • The Metropolitan Riveters, via Madison Packer, has announced that head coach Ivo Mocek is returning for the 2020-21 NWHL season.

NWHL News – Frat is Back!

Today the NWHL has announced a new signing for the Boston Pride.

 

Frat is Back!

  • The 2020 NWHL Defender of the Year Kaleigh Fratkin has re-signed with the Boston Pride for the 2020-21 season.

  • During the 2019-20 season Fratkin led all Pride defenders with three goals and 20 assists for 23 points in 24 regular season games.
  • Fratkin would also record a three point game against Connecticut in the semi-finals on March 8th.
  • Fratkin will be entering her sixth season, and in her first five seasons in the NWHL has 11 goals and 49 assists for 60 points in 87 regular season games with the Pride, Metropolitan Riveters, and Connecticut Whale.

NWHL Announce Draft!

Yesterday, the NWHL announced that they would be expanding to Toronto. Today, they followed up that news with the announcement that there will be an NWHL draft! Date of the draft will be on Tuesday April 28th for Rounds 1 and 2. Then on the following day April 29th, will be Rounds 3 through 5. All six teams will be participating, and it will be live on Twitter.

The last time the NWHL had a draft, it was back in 2018; however, the NWHL have been doing the draft since 2015. Let’s take a quick peak at the number 1 overall picks from 2015 – 2018.

2015 #1 overall pick was forward Alex Carpenter for the Metropolitan Riveters

2016 #1 overall pick was defender Kelsey Koelzer for the New York Riveters

2017 #1 overall pick was goalie Kaitlin Burt for the Boston Pride

2018 #1 overall pick was forward Annie Pankowski for the Metropolitan Riveters

Five Players Signed To New Toronto Team

You might have heard today, but the NWHL is expanding and getting a new team! The new home will be in Toronto.

 

Also announced with the new team is how the private ownership and the front office structure breaks down.

 

But the biggest news in the announcement today is that there are five players signed with the new Toronto team!

The Players are Taylor Woods, Kristen Barbara, Elaine Chuli, Emma Greco, and Shiann Darkangelo.

Lets take a brief moment and meet the players:

Taylor Woods:

Taylor Woods is a forward from Morden, Manitoba. She played 4 years of college hockey at Cornell University. After college she would play in the CWHL Brampton Thunder, which was later renamed the Markham Thunder, and was a member of the 2017 Clarkson Cup winning team.

Kristen Barbara:

Kristen Barbara is a defender from Mount Hope, Ontario. She played 5 years a York University. She also played in the CWHL following college hockey, for the Brampton Thunder, renamed Markham Thunder. Was a member of the 2017 Clarkson Cup winning team.

Elaine Chuli:

Elaine Chuli is a goaltender from Waterford, Ontario. She played 4 years of college hockey at the University of Connecticut. After her 4 years of college hockey, she would play for the CWHL. She spent 1 season with Vanke Rays, and the following season, she would play for the Toronto Furies.

Emma Greco:

Emma Greco is a defender from Burlington, Ontario. She played 4 years of college hockey at Quinnipiac University. If the name sounds familiar, she did play 1 season with the Connecticut Whale after college. After her 1 year in the NWHL, she played for the Toronto Furies in the CWHL.

Shiann Darkangelo:

Shiann Darkangelo is a forward from Royal Oak, Michigan. She played 4 years of college hockey, 2 years at Syracuse University, and her other 2 years at Quinnipiac University. Another name that should be familiar with NWHL fans, she played 1 year with the Connecticut Whale, and the following season with the Buffalo Beauts. She would then play for the CWHL for the Kunlun Red Star for 1 season, and the following season, would play for the Toronto Furies.

NWHL Expands to Toronto!!

This morning the National Women’s Hockey League has expanded to Toronto for the 2020-21 season.

 

Toronto Signs First Five Players

  • Along with the announcement that the NWHL has expanded to Toronto, the NWHL also announced the first five players signings for the new franchise as well.
  • Kristen Barbara is a 27 year old defender whose played three seasons in the CWHL, and won the Clarkson Cup in 2019 with the Markham Thunder.
  • Elaine Chuli is a 25 year old goaltender, and played for the Vanke Rays and the Toronto Furies of the CWHL. Chulie is also a member of the 2012 Team Canada group that won gold medal at the U-18 World Championships.
  • Taylor Woods, also a member of the 2012 U-18 gold medal team with Chuli, is a 25 year old forward that was a mainstay in the Markham/Brampton Thunder lineup since 2016. Woods would also win the Clarkson Cup in 2019 with Markham.
  • Shiann Darkangelo returns to the NWHL where she was a popular player for both Buffalo and Connecticut. Darkangelo was a member of the US National team when they won gold at the 2016 IIHF World Championships, and also spent time recently playing flr Toronto and Kunlun of the CWHL.
  • Emma Greco also returns to the NWHL, previously playing the 2017-18 season with Connecticut, and she was a part of the Toronto Furies in CWHL’s final season.

 

Meet the Executives

  • The ownership team for the new Toronto franchise is lead by Johanna Neilson Boynton, who is the CEO oand co-Founder of Boynton Brennan Builders.
    • Boynton also played four years Harvard.

  • Tyler Tumminia, a sports team owner and executive whose been name one of the Top 25 Female Executives by Bleacher Report, takes over as the team’s Chairman.
    • Tumminia was also awarded the Game Changer Award by the Sports Business Journal.

  • Digit Murphy has been named President of the Toronto franchise, and brings with her more than three decades of hockey experience leading teams at Brown University and in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
    • Murphy will oversee the hiring of the team’s General Manager and Head Coach.

  • For the new Toronto franchise the team name, venue, additional staff, and other news will be announced in the upcoming weeks and months, but beginning today fans can go to http://toronto.nwhl.zone/name-your-team to submit team name, colors, and design ideas for Toronto’s new team.

Orlando Comes Back For Season Six

News from the Pod today as original NWHL defender Elena Orlando has re-signed with the Whale, returning for her sixth season, and her fifth with the Whale.

This past season with the Whale, she saw a career high in points, with 3 assists in the 24 games that she played. She was also third on the team in terms of blocked shots with 26 recorded. Also, my favorite stat, cause I play center, she has taken 3 faceoffs this season, she won 2 of them and lost only 1.

She was named an NWHL All Star this season, getting to participate in the festivities in Boston. She played for Team Packer, along with her teammate Grace Klienbach. She took part in the hardest shot competition.

With this signing, it gives the Pod their veteran defensive presence on the back end. Also, it gives the team one of it’s best shot blockers, and puck moving defenders back for another season!

NWHL News – Orlando Returns

Today in the NWHL the Connecticut Whale continue to re-sign players as they build for the 2020-21 season.

 

Orlando Returns

  • The Whale have re-signed veteran defender Elena Orlando for the 2020-21 season.

  • Orlando is returning for her sixth NWHL season, and fifth with the Whale.
  • Orlando was a 2020 NWHL All Star, and a former NWHL Foundation Award recipient.
