Washington Capitals (7-4-0 14pts) v. Nashville Predators (4-3-5 13pts)
Game Recap:
The Washington Capitals hit the road for the first time in two weeks and for the 4th time this season as they visit the Nashville Predators.
Before the game even took place, former Capitals head coach Barry Trotz would be honored by the Predators as they inducted him into their Golden Hall of Fame. Also before the game, Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin met with Trotz to give him a gift as a congratulations for his special night. In return, Trotz and Predators captain Roman Josi gifted Ovechkin a custom guitar.
In the first period Charlie Lindgren was the star of the period for the Capitals. Lindgren would stop 11 of the 12 shots he faced in the opening frame to keep the Capitals in the game. The lone goal given up, you can’t really blame him for it because it was a long two-man advantage for the Predators, and Filip Forsberg would be able to take advantage of the tired penalty killers to get the powerplay goal past Lindgren.
In the second period Lindgren would not be tested as often as he only faced 4 shots, and while Forsberg would score his second of the during the middle frame, this was a play that doesn’t fall on Lindgren as the defense in front of him coughed the puck up in their own zone and allowed Forsberg to go undetected and have his way with Lindgren to score the goal.
In the third period, Lindgren would continue to battle for the Capitals, but another defensive breakdown would undo the hard work Lindgren would make to keep the Predators at bay as Ross Colton would get past the defense to get the loose puck past Lindgren. Lindgren would complete the game with 24 saves on 27 shots faced to pick up his third consecutive victory.
For the Capitals, Cole Hutson would score a pair of goals in this game, but while his top shelf goals were the talk of the game, newcomer Jack St. Ivany quietly earned his second straight two assist game since joining the Capitals earlier in the week via waivers. St. Ivany has been a steady presence on the ice and an ideal defensive partner for Hutson so far.
St. Ivany is averaging 15 minutes per game in his first two games with the Capitals, and with continued solid play like what he has shown so far in this small sample size, we can see him gaining more opportunities as the season progresses.
