2026-27 Preview
Getting Younger with a Reset
For the St. Louis Blues, the 2026-27 season represents an opportunity to hit the reset button after an abysmal 2025-26 campaign. The organization wasted little time making changes, beginning with the decision to trade forward Jordan Kyrou to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Connor McMichael and a prospect.
The Blues continued reshaping their forward group by acquiring Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks. The young forward brings additional offensive ability and fits into St. Louis’ efforts to inject more youth into a roster that has relied heavily on its veteran core.
On the blue line, the Blues focused on adding size, physicality, and experience by acquiring Brandon Carlo. Carlo brings a more physical element to the defensive corps and should provide additional grit and toughness as St. Louis looks to become a more difficult team to play against.
For the Blues, these moves are about more than simply changing personnel—they are about changing the direction of the team. St. Louis is hoping that the combination of younger offensive talent and added physicality will help rejuvenate the roster and provide a much-needed spark heading into the 2026-27 season.
The Blues still have plenty of work to do, but after such a disappointing season, they are clearly taking steps to create a new identity. If the new additions can complement the team’s established veterans and the younger players continue to develop, St. Louis could make the 2026-27 season the beginning of a much-needed turnaround.
Looking to Be in the Playoff Bubble
With the moves they made this offseason, the Blues are hoping to work their way back into the playoff picture. However, that will be no easy task with the Central Division remaining one of the most competitive divisions in the NHL. Minnesota, Dallas, and Colorado have established themselves as the proven leaders of the division, giving St. Louis a difficult group of teams to chase.
The competition doesn’t stop there. Utah will be looking to return to the playoffs after continuing to build its roster, while Winnipeg and Nashville will be determined to bounce back after disappointing seasons and get back into the postseason mix. With so many teams competing for limited playoff spots, the Blues will have very little room for error.
St. Louis will need its new additions to make an immediate impact while its veteran core returns to form. If the Blues can find consistency and stay healthy, they could make a push for a playoff spot. However, in a Central Division this deep, simply being competitive may not be enough—they will need to prove they can consistently beat the teams they’re battling for those final postseason spots.
