2026-27 Preview
Embracing the Rebuild
The Flames have fully committed to their rebuilding process, with an eye toward building a younger core for the future. As part of that transition, Calgary moved on from veterans Blake Coleman, Olli Määttä, and Ryan Lomberg while adding promising young talent in Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov.
Calgary also added veteran defenseman Jacob Middleton, whose physical style and leadership should provide stability on the blue line while helping mentor the team’s younger defensemen. Up front, the Flames will be looking for established veterans Jonathan Huberdeau, who returns after recovering from hip surgery, along with Joel Farabee and Yegor Sharangovich, to take on larger offensive roles and provide leadership during the rebuild.
The organization’s future appears promising thanks to an emerging group of homegrown talent. Matvei Gridin and Zayne Parekh are expected to take significant steps forward as they continue their development, while Aydar Suniev and Tyson Gross are poised to make the jump to the NHL on a full-time basis.
Although the long-term outlook is encouraging, the Flames are likely to experience their share of growing pains during the 2026-27 season as their young core gains valuable NHL experience. The focus in Calgary will be less on immediate results and more on establishing a foundation that can return the franchise to contention in the years ahead.
How Many Games Will Dustin Wolf Steal?
Dustin Wolf has firmly established himself as the Flames’ No. 1 goaltender, and the 25-year-old will once again be counted on to keep Calgary competitive throughout the 2026-27 season. Over the past two years, Wolf has recorded at least 20 wins in each season while facing an average of roughly 1,550 shots annually, a testament to both his workload and importance to the team.
Although his goals-against average and save percentage dipped during the 2025-26 campaign, Wolf will be looking to rebound this season while continuing to serve as a steady presence for a team in the midst of a rebuild. His performance will be critical as Calgary’s young roster develops and gains experience.
Backing up Wolf is Devin Cooley, who is expected to shoulder a portion of the workload and help keep the starter fresh over the course of the season. Also waiting in the wings is Arsenii Sergeev, who impressed in his lone NHL appearance last season and remains an intriguing option for the future.
For the Flames, Wolf’s play could ultimately determine how competitive the team remains on a nightly basis. While Calgary is focused on its long-term development, another strong season from its franchise goaltender would go a long way toward making the rebuilding process a more successful one.
