The first game of the second round matchup between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers took place tonight. In the first round, the Hurricanes defeated the Bruins in a seven game series, while the Rangers defeated the Penguins in a seven game series as well.
Here is how the two teams would line up:
In the first period, it would be the visiting Rangers who would get on the board first. The goal coming from Filip Chytil, his second goal of the playoffs. The lone assist on the play would come from Alexis Lafreniere. The Rangers would take a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
There would be no scoring in the second period, as both goalies would stop all the offensive chances both teams would send towards the net.
Very late in the third period, the Hurricanes would finally find the breakthrough and get on the scoresheet. The goal would come from Sebastian Aho, his third goal of the playoffs. The assists on the play would come from Seth Jarvis and Teuvo Teravainen. The game would be tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Early in the OT session, it would be the home Hurricanes who would bring the hammer down. The goal coming from an unlikely hero in Ian Cole. The overtime game winner would be his first goal of the playoffs. The assists on the play would come from Brendan Smith and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The Hurricanes now have the early 1-0 lead in the series.
