Bruins Powerplay Slays Canes

Carolina Hurricanes v. Boston Bruins
Game 3 – CAR Leads 2-0

Game Recap:

Shipping up to Boston for Game Three, the Bruins look to contain the Carolina Hurricanes and cut their series lead to one. In the first period the B’s would get the first powerplay opportunity as Jordan Martinook would go to the box for high sticking Taylor Hall, and with the powerplay the B’s would not capitalize on the extra man advantage. Then shortly after killing of the penalty the Canes would net the first goal of the game as Vincent Trocheck would muscle his way past Brandon Carlo to collect the rebound in the slot to score and give the Canes the 1-0 lead. Shortly after the goal Martinook would go back to the box to put the Bruins, back on the powerplay. However, once again the B’s would fall flat, and then the Canes would go on the powerplay for the first time this game. But it would be a breakdown by the Canes that would lead to Jake DeBrusk charging into the Canes zone and he would feed Charlie Coyle with the pass to score the shorthanded tally to tie the game at one. The Bruins would kill off the penalty, but with 34.8 seconds left in the period Brad Marchand would go off for slashing to put the Canes back on the powerplay. The first period would end tied at one with the Canes with 1:25 left on the powerplay.

To start the second period the Canes would continue their powerplay from the first period, and the Canes would be unable to capitalize on the powerplay. After killing the penalty the B’s would settle in and as a result Brad Marchand would take control in the slot to score and give the Bruins the 2-1 lead. The Canes would get a chance to tie the game as Connor Clifton would go to the box for cross checking, and on the powerplay Tony DeAngelo and Marchand would take coincidental minors and the powerplay would expire with only two shots on goal for the Canes. After the powerplay ended the Canes would get a flurry of chances to score, but the B’s would be up to the task as they were able to keep their one goal lead. Then a little past the midway point of the period Ian Cole would go off for interference, but then Trocheck would go off for hooking to give the Bruins the two man advantage, and the Canes would wipe out the two man advantage but int he final seconds of the second penalty David Pastrnak would let go a beautiful wrister to give the Bruins the powerplay goal to take the 3-1 lead. In the final five minutes of the period Connor Clifton would go to the box for two minutes for roughing, despite it being a head shot, and on the powerplay the Canes would get some looks, but once again would not score on the extra man opportunity. After forty minutes of play the Bruins would take the 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

Then in the third period Trocheck would go to the box for tripping, and 19 seconds into the powerplay Taylor Hall would receive the quick return pass from Pastrnak to score and grow the Bruins lead to three. 40 seconds later Nick Foligno would get called for cross checking as the Canes would gain their fifth powerplay opportunity, but the Canes would be held shot-less as the B’s kill off the penalty. Then as the rest of the period would seem to go Boston’s way, Jaccob Slavin would strike to get the Canes back within two with 8:30 left in the game. In the final minutes of the game the Canes would pull the goaltender as they would force the play in the Bruins zone, but the Bruins would hold on for the 4-2 victory over the Hurricanes to cut Carolina’s series lead to one.
