New Jersey Devils (26-42-7 59pts) @
Seattle Kraken (24-44-6 54pts)
Game Recap:
Coming off a loss in Denver on Thursday night, the New Jersey Devils look to win the season series as they head to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Kraken. The Devils won the previous matchup back at the Prudential Center 4-2. Tonight the Devils got on the board first as Jesper Bratt continues his outstanding season by scoring his twenty-fifth goal of the year at 3:12 mark by wristing a shot past Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer. It was a good start until Will Borgen was able to slap a beauty of a shot that was set up by Victor Rask to tie the game for the Kraken for his second goal of the season. The theme of this period for the Devils was the strong play of both their players named Jesper, this time it was Jesper Boqvist who gave the Devils their lead back as he would get a backhand pass from Pavel Zacha to the slot and then snapped it home for his eight goal of the campaign. After that, the scoring would stop and the New Jersey Devils would take a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission.
Period two was relatively quiet until things started to heat up for the Kraken slightly past the fifteen minute mark. Carson Soucy tied things up at two a piece as he wristed a shot from the high slot to beat Devils goalie Nico Daws. Soucy’s goal wouldn’t be the only one for Seattle as the highly touted former number two overall pick in last years draft Matty Beniers would get his first National Hockey League goal about a minute and a half later. Beniers would collect the puck after it hit the post from a Jared McCann deflection and put it into the back of the net to give the Kraken a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
New Jersey would get the score tied 3-3 at the 4:55 mark of the third period as Michael McLeod found Damon Severson at the right face off circle who then roofed one past the goalie for his eleventh goal of the season. After that, there would be no more scoring and this game would require overtime.
Each team had some chances to score in overtime and traded some chances. Seattle even had a power play but was unable to capitalize with the man advantage and onto the shootout we’d go. In the shootout, Ryan Donato would be the hero as he deked his way around Devils goalie Nico Daws and gave the Kraken a 4-3 victory over the Devils. New Jersey is back in action on Monday night as they head to “Sin City” to take on the Vegas Golden Knights.
