Hamilton’s OT Heroics Down Blues

New Jersey Devils (20-31-5 45pts) vs

St. Louis Blues (32-16-7 71)

Game Recap:

Coming off a Friday night loss to their Hudson River rivals in the New York Rangers, this afternoon the New Jersey Devils look to get back in the win Columbus against one of the Central Division’s best teams in the St. Louis Blues. It was relatively quiet to start as both teams were feeling each other out and did trade some chances in both offensive zones. However, the Devils would be the ones to jump on the scoreboard first thanks to a goal by Ty Smith who returned to the lineup and scored his second goal of the season assisted by Jesper Bratt & Nico Hischier. Smith joined up in the rush and was given a sweet cross ice pass from Jesper Bratt and fired it into the back of the net to beat Blues goalie Ville Husso to make it 1-0. That would be the only goal of the period and New Jersey would hold onto the lead heading into the second period.

The middle frame was absolutely fantastic for the New Jersey Devils as they limited the St. Louis Blues to only one shot on goal for the entire period. When on the power play or 5 on 5, the Devils maintained the puck and did a great job on the forecheck and keeping possession of it. As a result, the Devils were able to extend their lead to 2-0 thanks to a Dawson Mercer goal on a nice feed to the other side of the net from Jack Hughes to score his fourteenth goal of the season. That would remain the score as we finish period two and move onto period three.

Despite a poor second period, the St. Louis Blues came out with more of a fire in their game and it showed early on in the third as they got two goals from Corey Krug and Jordan Kyrou to tie the score 2-2. Krug’s goal came as he joined the rush and wristed one past Devils goalie Nico Daws and Kyroy’s goal was set up beautifully from Brayden Schenn on a nice seem pass to the right side of the net and in for the tying goal. It would remain that way all the way to overtime despite each team having power play chances late in the game. In overtime, Dougie Hamilton would get to be the hero as Jack Hughes helped get the winning play started, & Pavel Zacha would help Hamilton finish it with a nice pass to spring him in alone and roof the shoot over goalie Ville Husso for the win. Ext time we see the New Jersey Devils in action will be on Tuesday night as they host the Colorado Avalanche.
