The second game between the Riveters and the Whitecaps took place today. The Whitecaps won the first game by a score of 5-2. Here is how the two teams lined up today.
Early in the first period, the visiting Riveters would get on the board first. Madison Packer carried the puck up the right side of the ice, she laid a beautiful drop pass that found a hard streaking Rebecca Russo, who skated to the middle and patiently outwaited the goalie and roofed the shot to the back of the net.
The Riveters would then double their lead. Kendall Cornine would throw a pass to her left, and it found the tape of Theresa Knutson. Knutson would hard charge the Whitecaps defender, and before she got to the circle, she would rifle the shot short side, beating Friend over her blocker.
The Whitecaps would then cut into the Riveter lead. Allie Thunstrom intercepted a pass from the Riveter defender. She skated up the right side of the offensive zone and made a power move toward the net. She then sniped the shot over the glove of Brooke Wolejko.
The Whitecaps would go on to tie up the game. Alex Woken would throw a beautiful cross ice pass that would find the stick of Haley Mack, who streaked up the left side. She would get the shot through the short side, over Wolejko’s blocker.
Before the end of the period, the Whitecaps would take the lead for the first time in the game. Audra Morrison would throw the puck towards the net from the left circle. The puck somehow managed to find the back of the net.
In the second period, the Riveters would tie up the game. Madison Packer stole the puck off the faceoff, made a power move toward the net, and she stuffed the puck around Friend’s leg pad. The second period would end with both teams tied.
In the third period, the Riveters would re-establish their lead. The goal coming via the power play. The shot by the point by Rose Alleva would get deflected on its way to the net by Theresa Knutson. It was Knutson’s second goal of the game.
The Riveters would then take a 2 goal lead, once again via the power play. Kelly Babstock would reveive the pass from Kristen Barbara. Babstock, who was in the right circle, took the shot that was roofed over Friend’s glove and popped the water bottle.
Theresa Knutson would add an insurance marker for the Riveters and completes her hat trick. Knutson ripped off the Whitecaps player in the neutral zone, she skated up the left side and rifled another shot short side and over the blocker.
The Whitecaps would respond, trying to get back in the game. Ashleigh Brykaliuk would skate up the left side. She would then deke a couple of Riveter defenders and roof another shot over Wolejko.
That would be the closest the Whitecaps would come, as the Riveters would deposit an empty net goal. It would seal the victory for the visitors and get the captain Madison Packer her 100th career points in the regular season.
Brooke Wolejko of the Riveters would face 44 shots, making 40 saves; while Julie Friend would face 36 shots, making 30 saves.
