Detroit Red Wings (3-2-1 7pts) v. Washington Capitals (4-0-2 10pts)

Game Recap:
In Washington the Capitals would take on the Detroit Red Wings for their only meeting at Capital One Arena, and it wouldn’t exactly be the start the Caps wanted as Dmitry Orlov would get called for Tripping 23 seconds into the game to give the Wings the early powerplay opportunity. The Caps would kill off the Orlov penalty and as the period would go on the Caps would build their momentum as they would generate some solid scoring chances. With the pressure the Caps will putting on the Wings in their own zone, Sam Gagner would trip up TJ Oshie to give the Caps their first powerplay of the game. In the final seconds of the powerplay Alex Ovechkin would score from his knees in front of the net to end the Caps powerplay drought and give them the 1-0 lead off of his eighth goal of the season. However, the period would end as it started for the Caps as Nic Dowd would be called for cross checking to end the period and give the Red Wings the powerplay to start the second period.
In the second period the Caps would be successful in killing off the Detroit powerplay to start the period and then at 3:56 Danny DeKeyser would be called for hooking Lars Eller, and this powerplay did not last long as the Caps only needed four seconds for Evgeny Kuznetsov to net his fifth of the season to give the Caps the two goal lead. Then later in the period Adam Erne would take advantage of chaos around the net to bury the puck home for his second of the season to cut the Red Wings deficit to one. The Caps would get one more powerplay opportunity shortly after giving up the goal, but this time the Wings would play more defensively sound to keep the Caps only ahead by one as they entered the second intermission.
The third period the Red Wings would get the jump on the Caps as Robby Fabbri would strike to 2:03 into the period to tie the game at two. Then midway through the Michael Rasmussen would get called for hooking Alex Ovechkin as he was trying to shoot the puck, and a shot that almost went in if it weren’t for the post. On the powerplay the Caps would finally mix it up and generate a couple of solid scoring chances, but Thomas Griess would have the hot glove to force overtime for the Wings. In the extra frame it would be Dylan Larkin striking 97 seconds into overtime for his third of the season and to give the Red Wings the 3-2 victory. This will mark the third time this season the Caps have fallen in overtime to have them go 0-3 in the extra frame.
