This afternoon brought some exciting news for the Seattle Kraken and their fan base. Firstly, Mark Giordano was named the first captain in Kraken franchise history. Giordano was previously the captain of the Calgary Flames before being selected in the expansion draft by Seattle. Secondly, the Kraken announced its leadership group that will help support captain Mark Giordano. It was announced that Yanni Gourde, Jayden Schwartz, Jordan Eberle, and Adam Larsson Will serve as alternate captains for the 2021-2022 inaugural season.
It’s not a surprise to me that Mark Giordano was named the first captain in Seattle Kraken franchise history. It was inevitable the minute they drafted him at the expansion draft this summer. It was the right and only choice. Giordano has a reputation around the league as being a great leader on and off the ice having been a captain previously, plays hard and with heart, and is obviously a great defenseman being a former Norris trophy winner as the leagues top defenseman. Great choice here and was a no brainer.
I also like the alternate captain choices Seattle made as well. Having guys like Yanni Gourde Jayden Schwartz, Adam Larsson, & Jordan Eberle as alternate captains as are all great as they’re veteran players with a lot of respect around the league. They will be very good at supporting captain Mark Giordano. In particular, Jayden Schwartz and Yanni Gourde’s voices carry a lot of weight as they’re both Stanley Cup champions who have shown they know how to win in the playoffs. Overall, the Seattle Kraken hit another home run out of the park and picked a very good leadership group as they navigate their way through their inaugural season in the National Hockey League.
