2021-22 Preview
After an abysmal season that saw them miss the playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers got aggressive this offseason and looked to revamp the core of their team. They traded away defensemen Philippe Myers, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Robert Hagg to acquire Rasmus Ristolainen, Ryan Ellis, and Keith Yandle as the blueline was the most improved position for the Flyers. Ristolainen and Ellis is going to be solid defensively for the Flyers, plus both players are good puck movers and, especially with Ristolainen, brings more grit to their defense. Yandle will be primarily a powerplay guy and will play third line minutes, but will also bring valued experience to their third pairing as well.
On offense the Flyers were able to unsaddle themselves of one of their daunting contracts as they would trade Jakub Voracek to Columbus for Cam Atkinson. Plus the signings of Derick Brassard and Nate Thompson give the Flyers some more depth pieces for their offense. Wade Allison will look to become a more permanent fixture for the Flyers, and Joel Farabee and Travis Konecny will look to continue their upward progress and development.
In net Carter Hart will be the guy, but it’ll now be Martin Jones backing him up instead of Brian Elliott. I wouldn’t say Jones is a greater upgrade to Elliott, but he has been a number one guy before and can be trusted to step in when needed. Key thing is how much the defense will help out the goaltenders. Biggest flaw I saw was not in Hart or Elliott, but that of the team defense that left them out to dry. I definitely see a bounce back season for Hart.
