2021-22 Preview
For the first time in 15 years the Calgary Flames will go into a season without stalwart defenseman Mark Giordano as he was selected by Seattle in the expansion draft. With the departure of their captain for the last eight seasons, the Flames will now need to look to the future and see who will now lead them. Also they will need to fill the hole on defense and on their top powerplay unit. The Flames acquired Nikita Zadorov from Chicago, but he will start on the third pair. Rasmus Andersson has a lot of promise and could potentially step into that number one defenseman role pending his development.
In goal Jacob Markstrom will be the number one again, but this time the Flames will look to Dan Vladar who had a bit of a coming out party with Boston this past season when injuries were plaguing them. Still an unproven, Vladar will be needed to looked upon to play 20-30 games this season. The big question will be if he can handle the full time NHL back up role in what would be his first full season in the League. If not, then the Flames will need to look elsewhere.
On offense the Flames added pieces in Blake Coleman, Tyler Pitlick, and Trevor Lewis. Coleman and Lewis bring valuable Stanley Cup experience that has been needed in the locker room. However, secondary scoring still looks to be a concern once you get past the top six. Andrew Mangiapane will look to continue to grow and develop his game, but the rest of the bottom six will be looked to step up their offensive production as well.
