It’s another rebuild season for the Anaheim Ducks.
Goaltender John Gibson posted an abysmal record of 9-19-7 with a 2.98 GAA and a .903 save percentage. Abysmal because of the team that was given. Gibson is still young enough that he can be a key piece once the Ducks are out of the current rebuild.
With Max Comtois being re-signed to a two-year deal at $4.075 million, after a season where he scored 16 goals and had 33 points in 55 games is very encouraging, but not encouraging when he got the team scoring title with those numbers. I expect things to be a bit better if Comtois and Trevor Segras develop more.
In order for the Ducks to have any kind of long term success during the season, they will need to click on offense. In two out of the last three seasons, Anaheim has ranked last in goals per game (2.21 in 2020-21 and 2.39 in 2018-19). Zegras showed promise last season when he played in 24 games, registering 13 points (three goals and 10 assists) however he will need to up his game to get Anaheim back on the right scoring track. Mason McTavish, taken with the third overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, may also be leaned on to give the offense the additional spark, with the Ducks still going through the rebuild process. Anaheim joins the Arizona Coyotes as the only teams to not have a player register 50 points since the 2018-19 season.
With a team that is going to be plentiful with young players, it could be the start of a better outlook for Anaheim, however, the younger players will be looked at to bring the spark back to the scoring for the Ducks as well as be leaned on with the older veterans to be the future of the franchise.
