MARIAH FUJIMAGARI TO JOIN WHALE FOR FIRST FULL SEASON

Danbury, CT- The Connecticut Whale are getting another familiar face back in net next year as goaltender Mariah Fujimagari has re-signed with the club heading into the 2021-22 season.

“Fuji adds strong leadership and work ethic to our team,” said Connecticut assistant general manager and assistant coach Laura Brennan. “She always brings an upbeat and positive energy to the rink and is someone who pushes herself and her teammates to be better day in and day out, both on and off the ice.”

Fujimagari trained with the Whale leading up to last year’s abbreviated season in Lake Placid where she served as the emergency backup goaltender for the entire league. She signed with Connecticut during that season and appeared in one game for the team.

“I’m very excited to be a contributing member of the Whale this season. The culture and commitment to excellence really align with who I am,” said Fujimagari. “From the top down the pieces are in place for us to be a powerhouse.”

Fujimagari started her NWHL career in Buffalo, playing with the Beauts for the 2019-20 season. The Markham, Ontario native appeared in 14 games and earned her first career victory in her debut against the Whale with a 29-save performance on October 5, 2019.

The 27-year-old played collegiately at the University of Maine where she appeared in

34 total games over four years. She finished her career with a .890 save percentage.

After graduating she signed overseas and played with SKP Bratislava during the 2017-18 season. She then signed with the Worcester Blades for the 2018-19 season, finishing with a .866 save percentage and a 6.74 goals-against average before signing with the Beauts the following season.

Fujimagari is now the team’s eighth player announced under contract for the 2021-22 campaign and second goaltender joining fellow returnee Abbie Ives.
