Game 2 of the Penguins and Islanders series took place tonight, an encore to their thrilling Game 1 performance which saw the Islanders win 4-3 in Overtime. Here are the lineups for tonight’s game:
The first period would see the Penguins come out with a fast start, trying to establish their momentum, and set the tempo. They were rewarded with an unassisted goal coming from Bryan Rust, giving the Penguins the early lead.
10 minutes later, the Penguins would double their lead. The goal coming from their trade deadline acquisition Jeff Carter. Assists on the play came from Jared McCann and Kasperi Kapanen. The period would end with the Penguins leading 2-0.
In the second period, the Penguins would come out hard to continue their momentum and further extend their lead. However, Varlamov would have all the answers, as the Islanders would make a late push in the second. They would get their breakthrough with about 5 minutes left in the period, the goal coming from Josh Bailey, with the assists on the play coming from Brock Nelson and Scott Mayfield. The period would end with the Islanders still down one goal.
In the third period, with the Islanders chasing the game trying to tie the game up, it gave more opportunities for the Penguins to try and re-establish their 2 goal lead, however Varlamov came up with all the saves, standing on his head and keeping the Islanders in the game. The Penguins played lockdown defense, and kept the Islanders from getting any quality chances, as Pittsburgh would hold on for the 2-1 victory to tie up the series. As it heads to New York for Game 3.
