The Islanders and the Penguins played the opener of their series in Pittsburgh. Here is the starting lineups for both teams:
In the first period, the Penguins came out flying, trying to establish momentum and feed off the crowd that was on hand at PPG Paints Arena. Sorokin was the starter for the Islanders, came up with all the answers to the Penguins attack. When the game settled down, the first goal of the game went to the Islanders. The goal coming from Kyle Palmieri, with the assists on the play coming from JG Pageau and Noah Dobson.
The lead would only last for 3 minutes, as the Penguins would tie the game up. The goal coming from Frederick Gaudreau, and the assist coming from Evan Rodrigues. It would be Rodrigues’ first point in the playoffs. The period would end with both teams tied at 1.
In the second period, the Penguins would grab the lead early in the frame. The goal coming from the captain Sidney Crosby. Assists on the play came from Brian Dumoulin and Jake Guentzel.
In the third period, the Islanders would get the fast goal to tie the game up at 2. The goal coming from JG Pageau, his second point of the game. The assist coming from Scott Mayfield. The Islanders would then retake the lead 12 minutes later, the goal coming from Brock Nelson, assists on the play coming from Anthony Beauvillier and Ryan Pulock.
30 seconds later, the Penguins would tie the game up, the goal coming from Kasperi Kapanen, with the assists on the play coming from Jeff Carter and Cody Ceci. The two teams would be tied at 3 at the end of regulation.
In the overtime session, the Islanders would be the team that would grab the win, the goal coming from Kyle Palmieri, his second goal of the game. Assists on the play came from JG Pageau, his third point of the game, and Oliver Wahlstrom.
