Minnesota Whitecaps (2-0-0 4pts) v. Metropolitan Riveters (2-0-0 4pts)
Game Recap:
As the NWHL returns to action after a day off, we would be treated with the battle of the two undefeated teams as the Metropolitan Riveters look to avenge their overtime playoff loss against the Minnesota Whitecaps from last year’s Semi-Finals of the Isobel Cup playoffs. In the first period the Riveters would force the play on the Whitecaps, and as a result would get two powerplay opportunities. However, despite creating great opportunities to take the lead, the Riveters would not be able to capitalize on their extra woman advantages and keeping the game tied at zero.
Come the second period we would see all the same as the first period which would be solid defensive hockey and stellar goaltending from Sonjia Shelly and Amanda Leveille. One difference for this period period would be that the Riveters would take both penalties, and just like the Rivs in the first, the Whitecaps would go 0 for 2 with their powerplay opportunities as this game would remained tied at zero after 40 minutes of action.
In the final 20 minutes of regulation it would literally come down to two penalties in the final minute of the game that would lead to a game winning goal. With 48 seconds remaining and 34 seconds remaining in regulation Rebecca Morse and Madison Packer would both be called for penalties and Haley Mack of the Whitecaps would take advantage as she would get one past Shelly to give Minnesota the 1-0 victory with 11 seconds left in the game. It was a true goaltending battle, but Leveille would outduel Shelly to take sole possession of first place in the NWHL.
