Devils acquire Andreas Johnsson from cap tight Maple Leafs

After making a very good move to sign Corey Crawford yesterday on the first day of free agency, Tom Fitzgerald and the Devils make another one by trading for Toronto Maple Leafs winger Andreas Johnsson in exchange for Joey Anderson. This is a salary cap space room trade for Toronto as they are right up against the salary cap after recently signing defenseman TJ Brodie. Here is a statement from the New Jersey Devils on the trade:

New Jersey Devils statement:

I’m really starting to think Tom Fitzgerald is secretly a magician! He keeps pulling out these magical moves that will help the Devils build their way back to being Stanley Cup contenders again. Fitzgerald clearly took advantage of a Maple Leafs team that is right up against the salary cap and needing to create more financial room. The Devils are getting a young 25 year old left handed shot winger, who is capable of scoring 20-30 goals a year and will automatically play in the top six with either Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier. All the Devils had to give up was Joey Anderson, a young player who at best may be a fourth line player. New Jersey clearly has plenty of cap space and was able to pluck a very talented player from a cap tight team in the Maple Leafs. Tom Fitzgerald knew it and was able to take advantage of it. Great move by Tom Fitzgerald and the New Jersey Devils!
