The Dallas Stars are ready and waiting to make their second consecutive playoff appearance after not having qualified for the post-season for two years prior. Last year, the Stars fell to the eventual-champion St. Louis Blues in Game 7 of the 2nd round. Dallas ended the 2019-20 season with a 37-24-8 record, earning them 3rd in the Central Division, despite having played 2 fewer games than the division-leading Blues.

The Stars rounded out the regular season on a six-game losing streak and were just 3-5-2 in their last 10 showings of the year. In that span, the Stars were outscored 17-9. Two of those eventual six losses came to the Nashville Predators, a team who the Stars rallied back against to defeat 4-2 in the 2020 Winter Classic at the iconic Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas. However, Dallas managed to string together a season-best seven-game winning streak in mid-November (11/13-25) (TheScore).

Impressively, all but one player on the Stars roster tallied goals in their 69 games, with that single player being defenseman Roman Polak who played 41 games after suffering an injury early in the season. Polak recently signed with Czech squad HC Vitkovice Ridera for the 2020-21 season.

Tyler Seguin, despite experiencing a significant drop-off in production compared to the season prior (33G, 47A), led his team in assists with 33, and points with 50, and managed to tally 17 goals in 69 games. The centerman posted the fewest goals of his career since his last season with the Boston Bruins (2012-13) in which he scored 16 goals as a 21-year old. Seguin individually did however boast the 5th best faceoff percentage in the league, winning 58.2% of all faceoffs taken. His team also holds the 5th best faceoff percentage league-wide with 51.8% of faceoffs won (TheScore).

The Stars’ power play which operated at 21.1% efficiency ranks 13th among all teams, but Jamie Benn, Alexander Radulov, and Denis Gurianov have been the difference-makers for Dallas. Between the three wingers, they have a combined 22 of 42 power-play goals for the squad, therefore making up over 52% of successful conversions with the man-advantage (ESPN).

The Dallas Stars will first take on the Vegas Golden Knights in the round-robin tournament to determine first-round matchups, and that game will take place on August 3rd. They will then play the Avalanche on August 5th, and finally the St. Louis Blues on August 9th.
