My reaction

I had some doubts after former GM Ray Shero was fired about keeping Tom Fitzgerald on as the permanent General Manager going forward. Usually it’s best to move on and look for a fresh perspective outside the organization. Then again, take a look at the Washington Capitals for example who hired Brian MacLellan to be their GM. MacLellan was then George McPhee’s protege and then got the General Manager job after McPhee was not retained. The rest became history as the Washington Capitals went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2018. Also, Tom Fitzgerald has had a great reputation as being one of the best up and coming General Managers.

After this trade of Blake Coleman and the earlier trade of Andy Greene, I’m sold on having Tom Fitzgerald being the General Manager going forward. He turned an aging thirty seven year old defenseman into a second round pick and a young defensive prospect in David Quenneville. Fitzgerald then in turn traded Blake Coleman for a first round pick and a highly touted scoring winger prospect in Nolan Foote. The scouting report on Foote holds him in high regard and is exactly what Fitzgerald wants for the Devils going forward. He wants high end young skill that is around the age of young stars Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes to build around. Fitzgerald actually has a plan and a vision going forward that appears to help get the Devils back to their winning ways of winning Stanley Cups. Overall, this trade was great in particular as it gives the Devils another first round pick and a highly touted prospect that they can add to their young core to build around with Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, and MacKenzie Blackwood. It’ll be interesting to see what other moves Fitzgerald makes as the NHL trade deadline quickly approaches on February 24th.
