Coming to you live from Denver for the Washington Capitals matchup against the Colorado Avalanche for the TXHT Road Trip, the Capitals look to bounce back from back to back blow out losses to the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders at home as they begin their three game road trip. However, the Avalanche would have other things in mind as less than three minutes into the game Andre Burakovsky would burie the one timer past Braden Holtby on a 2 on 1 to take the early 1-0 lead. Then late in the period TJ Oshie would be called for high sticking and the Avalanche would capitalize on their lone powerplay opportunity of the period as Mikko Rantanen would strike with a beautiful wrist shot to give the Avalanche the 2-0 lead.
In the second period both teams would trade powerplay opportunities, but it would be the Capitals striking on their first powerplay opportunity as Nicklas Backstrom would knock it in on the doorstep to bring the Capitals back within one. The Capitals would get another powerplay, but would be unable to capitalize the second time around. The Avalanche would get a solid full minute of five on three powerplay action, but Braden Holtby would be up for the task as he would shut down the Avalanche’s powerplay. The Capitals would end the period with a powerplay of their own, but will get to have 57 seconds with the extra man to start the third period.
Then in the third period the Capitals would not be able to capitalize on the remaing time of the powerplay to start the period, but they would get another opportunity on the powerplay only to not get the puck in the net on the powerplay opportunity. Later in the period the Capitals would get their second full powerplay opportunity of the period and it would be Tom Wilson deflecting a John Carlson point blast to to tie the game at two. Then with a little over two minutes left TJ Oshie would score to give the Capitals the 3-2 comeback victory over the Avalanche.
