New Jersey Devils (14-19-6 34pts) @ New York Islanders (25-10-3 53pts)
Tonight is the Devils first game of 2020 as they venture out to Long Island as they take on Metropolitan division rivals in the New York Islanders. This game would be a very tight defensive and low scoring game between the two teams. Period one was scoreless with each team trading some offensive chances but being unable to convert them.
Period two saw the Islanders get on the scoreboard first as Brock Nelson would score his fifteenth goal of the season. However, with about a minute and a half left in the second period, Devils defenseman PK Subban would blast a shot from the point off a set faceoff play to the the game at 1-1. That would be the score heading into the third and final period.
In the third period, Nico Hischier would score the game winning goal as he would take the puck after a faceoff and drive it to the front of the net and put it behind Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. The Islanders came close several times to tying the game in the final seconds but it was not enough as the Devils go onto win by a final score of 2-1. New Jersey is back in action on Saturday night as they take on the Colorado Avalanche.
