Analysis:
This was an ok period for the Capitals. The Rangers are playing aggressive and the Capitals will have to take advantage when the Rangers get a little over aggressive, which has happened a couple of times in the Rangers zone. Great response by the Capitals with the tying goal after the Rangers took an early lead.
Need to Do:
The Capitals need to do a better job of of controlling the tempo of the game. The Capitals had spurts where they controlled it, but they let the Rangers back in it too many times. The Capitals also need to keep pushing the play in the Rangers zone.

Rangers Penalty – 2:09 – Brett Howden 2 minutes for Tripping

PP 1/3 2/2 * 3rd in progress
Analysis:
This was a good period for the Capitals, but it was a better period for the Rangers. The Rangers out shot the Capitals 18-13 that period, and forced the Capitals to take some penalties. However the Capitals forced some penalties upon the Rangers as well, and got two powerplay goals and are entering the 3rd period with time left on their 3rd powerplay.
Need to Do:
The Capitals need to capitalize on this powerplay to start the period and use it to take the momentum of this game and put it in their favor. The Capitals need to also play a full 20 minutes to finish off the Rangers.
Third Period:
Capitals Penalty – 9:20 – Nathan Walker 2 minutes for Holding
Rangers PPG – 10:25 – Chris Kreider (4) from Neal Pionk (3) and Mika Zibanejad (2)
Rangers Penalty – 14:43 – Kevin Hayes 2 minutes for High Sticking
End of 3rd – NYR – 3 WAS – 3

Overtime:
Capitals Goal – 2:18 – Matt Niskanen (1) from Evgeny Kuznetsov (6) and TJ Oshie (3)
End of OT – NYR – 3 WAS – 4
Shots 32 38
Faceoffs 31 35
Hits 14 23
PP 2/4 2/4
Analysis:
A good win for the Capitals despite blowing their one goal lead and needing overtime to win this game. The Capitals out shot the Rangers in both the 3rd period and in overtime combined, but they had their defensive relapses in their own zone plus some bad penalties taken again let the Rangers stay in this one. The Capitals need to clean up the play in their own zone, especially in front of their own net as they are giving up too many chances and goals right in the slot area.
