NHL Three Stars of the Week for Dec. 30th – Jan. 5th

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of October 2nd through 6th.

 

First Star – Nathan MacKinnon (C, Colorado Avalanche)

  • MacKinnon would share the lead with three goals and five assists for eight points in three games played. MacKinnon would also record multi point games in all three games he appeared in as well. On Dec. 31st MacKinnon would score a pair of goals against Winnipeg. Then on Jan. 2nd he would score a goal and three assists against St. Louis, and would close out the week with a pair of assists against New Jersey on Jan. 4th.

Second Star – Mark Scheifele (C, Winnipeg Jets)

  • Scheifele would also register three goals and five assists for eight points in three games played. Scheifele would start the week with a four point (1g, 3a) night against Colorado on Dec. 31st. Then on Jan. 2nd he would register a goal and an assist against Toronto, and again on Jan. 4th against Minnesota to close the week.

Third Star – Zach Werenski (D, Columbus Blue Jackets)

  • Werenski would score five of the eight goals Columbus scored for the week. Werenski would start the week with his first career hat trick on Dec. 31st against Florida, and then would close out the week with a two goal game against San Jose on Jan. 4th.

Philadelphia Flyers v. Montreal Canadiens – 3p EST Start Time

In Montreal the Philadelphia Flyers look to down the Canadiens. In the first period it would be the Canadiens striking first as Joel Armia would net his ninth of the season to give Montreal the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Justin Brain would tie the game at one for the Flyers, but Tomas Tatar would quickly retake the lead for the Canadiens. However, Kevin Hayes would strike for the Flyers as they retie the game at two. Then in the third period Travis Konecny would give the Flyers their first lead of the game, but Tomas Tatar would score his second of the game while on the powerplay to tie the game at three and send the game to overtime. However, the Flyers would only need 31 seconds of the extra frame as Ivan Provorov would score his sixth of the season to give the Flyers the 4-3 victory.

 

Buffalo Sabres v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p EST Start Time

For the second consecutive night the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs would face each other, and after a scoreless first period William Nylander would strike for the Leafs to get them on the board. Then in the third period Rasmus Ristolainen would strike to tie the game at one and send the game into overtime. In the extra frame it would be John Tavares scoring his tenth of the season to give the LEafs the 2-1 victory.

 

Washington Capitals v. Detroit Red Wings – 7p EST Start Time

The Washington Capitals beat up on the lowly Detroit Red Wings as Alex Ovechkin nets the hat trick to reach 20 goals for the 5-2 victory. TXHT Recap

 

Carolina Hurricanes v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p EST Start Time

In Tampa Bay the Carolina Hurricanes would surge in the first period as they would get goals from Sebastian Aho (PPG), Jordan Martinook, and Jaccob Slavin to take the 3-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period both Brayden Point and Tyler Johnson would strike for the Lightning, but it would not be enough as the Hurricanes would hols on to win the game 3-2.

 

Nashville Predators v. Florida Panthers – 7p EST Start Time

At home in Florida the Panthers would play host to the Nashville Predators and after a scoreless first period Anton Stralman would get the Panthers on the board for the 1-0 lead. Then in the third period Stralman would strike again for his second of the game, and Aleksander Barkov would strike to give the Panthers the 3-0 shutout victory.

 

Columbus Blue Jackets v. New York Islanders – 7p EST Start Time

On Long Island the New York Islanders would play host to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the first period Andres Lee would get the Islanders on the board first. then in the second period Mathew Barzal would score to grow the Islanders lead to two. Also for the Islanders both Thomas Greiss and Semyon Varlamov would team up for the combined shutout as the Islanders defeated the Jackets 2-0.

 

Ottawa Senators v. Calgary Flames – 7p EST Start Time

In Calgary, the Flames look to start anew after the resignation of Bill Peters as they took on the visiting Ottawa Senators. In the first period Dillon Dube would get the Flames on the board first. Then after a scoreless second period the Senators would get on the board with a Jean-Gabriel Pageau tally, but the Flames would respond as Elias Lindholm would score back to back goals to lead the Flames to the 3-1 victory.

 

Pittsburgh Penguins v. St. Louis Blues – 8p EST Start Time

In St. Louis the Blues would face the Pittsburgh Penguins, and in the first period it would be Justin Faulk scoring his first goal as a member of the Blues to give the Blues the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Sam Lafferty would score to get the Penguins on the board to tie the game at one, but Nathan Walker would score his first as a Blue to retake the one goal lead. Then in the third period Kris Letang would score for the Penguins, but Ivan Barbashev, MacKenzie MacEachern and Jaden Schwartz (PPG) would all score to give the Blues the 5-2 victory.

 

San Jose Sharks v. Arizona Coyotes – 8p EST Start Time

The Kachina clad Arizona Coyotes would play host to the San Jose Sharks. In the first period the Coyotes would get goals from Nick Schmaltz and Derek Stepan to take the 2-0 lead, but Logan Couture would score to cut the Sharks deficit to one. Then in the second period Dylan Gambrell and Timo Meier would score to give the Sharks the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Couture would score his second of the game to give the Sharks the 3-2 victory.

 

Chicago Blackhawks v. Colorado Avalanche – 9p EST Start Time

The Colorado ?Avalanche would smother the Chicago Blackhawks at home. In the first period Brandon Saad would score shorthanded for the Blackhawks, but Nazem Kadri would net back to back goals, and then Nathan MacKinnon would score to give the Avalanche the 3-1 lead. In the second period Dominik Kubalik would score for Chicago, but Joonas Donskoi would net two goals, and Tyson Jost and the returning Mikko Rantanen would score to give the Avalanche the 7-2 lead. In the third period Patrick Kane would score on the powerplay, but it would not be enough as the Avalanche would hold on to secure the 7-3 victory.

 

Vancouver Canucks v. Edmonton Oilers – 10p EST Start Time

In Edmonton the Vancouver Canucks would come to town to take on their division rival Oilers. In the first period Tyler Graovac would strike on the powerplay then Tanner Pearson would strike while shorthanded to give the Canucks the 2-0 lead, but Connor McDavid would net his 19th of the season to cut the Oilers deficit to one. Then in the second period Zack Kassian would tie the game at two, but Pearson would strike for his second of the game, and Loui Eriksson would score for his first of the season to take the 4-2 lead. In the third period Josh Leivo would score to help the Canucks secure the 5-2 victory.

 

Winnipeg Jets v. Los Angeles Kings – 10p EST Start Time

The Los Angeles Kings would play host to the Winnipeg Jets, and in the first period Joakim Ryan and Nikolai Prokhorkin would score for the Kings to take the 2-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period the Jets would get a goal from Jack Roslovic, but it would not be enough as the Kings would hold on to win 2-1.

Game Recap- New Jersey Devils @ Winnipeg Jets 11/5/19

Game Recap

The New Jersey Devils are playing their second out of five games tonight on the road, as they take on the Winnipeg Jets. This is the first time these two teams have met since the Jets miraculously came back to beat the Devils in overtime 5-4 on opening night. Speaking of opening, New Jersey would open up the scoring first as Nico Hischier would backhand the puck into the net as Taylor Hall & Sami Vatanen would set him up for his second goal of the season. Hischier’s goal would stand as the only goal of the period giving the Devils a 1-0 lead after the first intermission.

Winnipeg was able to tie the game in the second period as Andrew Copp would tip in defenseman Josh Morrisey’s shot from the point. The two teams will remain deadlocked at 1-1 as they were go past regulation and overtime. Tonight’s game will be decided in a shoot out where the Devils Will be the only ones the score as they got goals from Nikita Gusev & rookie Jesper Boqvist Who is seal the victory for the Devils. Goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood was stellar in goal tonight for the Devils making 31 saves as he would be the first star of tonight’s game. The New Jersey Devils will win tonight by the final score of 2-1 in a shootout.

Then in the third period Brian Dumoulin would score while shorthanded to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, it would be the Oilers taking this one on a Leon Draisaitl goal to defeat the Penguins 2-1.

In Nashville, mere hours after unveiling their 2020 Winter Classic jersey, the Predators host the New York Rangers for an afternoon matinee. In the first period the Rangers would strike on a Filip Chytil marker to take the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Ryan Strome would grow the Rangers lead to two, but before the second was over Viktor Arvidsson would cut the Rangers lead back to one. However, it would not be enough as the Rangers would hold on to win 2-1.

In Boston the Ottawa Senators come to town looking to take down the Bruins, but after going back and forth with the Bruins the first two periods, the Bruins would get a three goal third period to secure the victory. The Senators would get their goals from Anthony Duclair and Connor Brown, while the Bruins got goals from David Pastrnak (PPG), Patrice Bergeron, Danton Heinen, Brad Marchand (PPG), and Jake DeBrusk to secure a 5-2 win.

However, in the third period the Devils would get goals from PK Subban and Damon Severson to secure a 5-3 victory.

In Columbus the Calgary Flames looked to burn down the Blue Jackets, and burn them they would as the Flames would score a goal per period and David Rittich would post a shutout for their victory.   • The New Jersey Devils acquired goaltender Louis Domingue from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a conditional 2021 7th Round Pick.

In Anaheim the Vancouver Canucks would outshoot the Ducks 19-5 in the first period, but it would be the Ducks getting the lone goal of the period when Jakob Silfverberg would score while shorthanded to give the Ducks the 1-0 lead. Then in the third period the Canucks would get on the board with a Adam Gaudette tally to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, in overtime Ryan Getzlaf would score the game winner to secure the 2-1 victory for the Ducks.

  • The Nashville Predators have announced that they have re-signed defenseman Roman Josi to an eight year contract worth $72.47 million.

The play would remain fairly even for the rest of the period. But the Bruins would strike again in the second period off the stick of Anders Bjork. The Bruins would control the play for the rest of the period and would add an empty netter in the third to seal the win and the 3-0 shutout for the Bruins.

The Leafs coming into the second half of a back to back, look to take it to their division rival. Montreal would open the scoring with two quick strikes off the sticks of Brendan Gallagher and Jonathan Drouin to give the Habs a 2-0 lead. Muzzin would score for the Leafs late in the first to give hope in an otherwise terrible first period. The second period would see the Leafs tie the game courtesy of Andreas Johnsson. Then the floodgates would open as Montreal would score 3 unanswered goals to give the Habs 5-2 win. Terrible defensive miscues and terrible zone coverage would ultimately be the demise of the Leafs.

The Preds looking come into the game looking to steal one from one of the east’s best teams. Nashville would open the score in the first off the stick of Calle Jarnkrok to give the Preds a 1-0 lead after one period. Stamkos and Johnson would strike back in the second period to take the lead for the Lightning 2-1. But Nashville Captain Roman Josi would score to tie the game and take it to overtime. In overtime Nashville defenceman Ryan Ellis would score to give the Preds 3-2.

Columbus is looking to grab some momentum as they take on the Flyers. Columbus Boone Jenner and Jakub Voracek of the Flyers would exchange goals in the first period.  Jenner would score in the second period as the Blue Jackets would add two more and James Van Riemsdyk would add one to cut the lead to 3-2 for Columbus. The Flyers would come out surging as Shayne Gostisbehere would score one of 5 goals in the third period for the Flyers, as the Blue Jackets would add just one of their own. The Flyers would walk away with a 7-4 win.

Pittsburgh comes into Dallas looking to keep the Stars down. The first two periods would see Matt Murray put on a clinic, making 22 saves and allowing no goals. But Pittsburgh would come out flying in the third scoring three unanswered goals to win the game 3-0 and record a shutout win for Matt Murray.

 

Los Angeles Kings v. Minnesota Wild – 8p EST Start Time

The Kings come into Minnesota hoping to pick up some points against the Wild. The Wild would open the score courtesy of Gerald Mayhew’s second of the season. The scoreboard would stay quiet until the second period where the Kings and Wild would exchange goals from Ben Hutton and Eric Staal respectively to bring the Wild’s lead to 2-1 after two periods. The third period would see the Wild score three unanswered goals to really take the pounding to the Kings 5-1.

 

Anaheim Ducks v. Colorado Avalanche – 9p EST Start Time

The Ducks sport new defencemen in Colorado as they hope to overcome some injuries to beat the surging Avalanche. The first period would see a pair of goals from the Ducks courtesy of Adam Henrique and Carter Rowney to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead after one period. Ryan Getzlaf and Joonas Donskoi would exchange goals in the second to bring the score to 3-1 Ducks. The third period would see a powerplay goal from Nathan MacKinnon to bring the led to 3-2 Ducks. But the Ducks would respond in the third with two of their own to take the win 5-2.

The Heritage Classic was a match for the making. You could visibly see all the snow on the ice, but the players seemed to visibly enjoy the game. Jets and Flames players raving about the ice and the conditions. The first period would come and go with no score, but not short of chances at both ends. The second period would see the Flames take a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal from Elias Lindholm, the rest of the period would see no scoring. The third period would bring drama, the Jets would tie the game thanks to a late goal by Josh Morrissey. This would send the game to overtime in Regina. Where Bryan Little would score to win the game and the Heritage Classic 2-1.

The Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs would renew their rivalry once again, this time in Boston as both teams look for their sixth win of the season. In the first period David Pastrnak would score a sneaky one for his 10th of the season on the powerplay. Then in the second period Kasperi Kapanen would get on the board for the Leafs to tie the game, but less than two minutes later Brad Marchand would strike to retake the lead for the Bruins. However, Alexander Kerfoot would score on the powerplay to tie the game back up at two. Then in the third period the Bruins would get a pair of goals from Brett Ritchie and Par Lindholm to secure a 4-2 victory over the Leafs.

 

San Jose Sharks v. Buffalo Sabres – 7p EST Start Time

In Buffalo the Sabres play host to the San Jose Sharks, and it would be the Sharks swimming all over the Sabres as they would get goals from Dylan Gambrell (first career NHL goal) and Marc-Edouard Vlasic to take a 2-0 lead. Then in the second period Jack Eichel would score for the Sabres while on the powerplay, then with 31 seconds left in the period Sam Reinhart would tie the game at two. Then in the third period Jeff Skinner would score 45 seconds into the game for the Sabres to take the lead, but Erik Karlsson would score his first of the season to tie the game and send it to overtime, which would see Jack Eichel score his second of the game to give the Sabres the 4-3 victory.

In Florida the Panthers take on the Pittsburgh Penguins and after a scoreless first period both teams would trade goals in the second. first it would be the Panthers striking with a Noel Acciari marker, then the Penguins would strike with a Teddy Blueger tally, but then the Panthers would strike back with a Denis Malgin goal to take the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Patric Hornqvist would score for the Penguins, but the Panthers would get goals from Jonathan Huberdeau and Frank Vatrano to secure a 4-2 victory for the Panthers.

 

Arizona Coyotes v. New York Rangers – 7p EST Start Time

At the legendary Madison Square Garden the New York Rangers would take on the Arizona Coyotes. In the first period the Coyotes would get the lone strike as Lawson Crouse would score his second of the season. Then in the second period Anthony DeAngelo would score his second of the season to tie the game at one, but late in the period both teams would trade powerplay goals as both Alex Goligoski and DeAngelo (his second of the game) would make this a 2-2 game heading into the second intermission. After a scoreless third period it would be the Coyotes striking in overtime as Christian Dvorak scoring his fourth of the season to give the Coyotes the 3-2 victory.

In Detroit the Red Wings would take on the Vancouver Canucks, and in the first period Anthony Mantha would strike for the Wings on the powerplay for the lone tally of the period. In the second period the Wings would get the lone goal from Dennis Cholowski to gain the 2-0 lead, but in the third period the Canucks would score five unanswered goals to take the victory. The Canucks would get a hat trick from captain Bo Horvat (2 PPGs, and an even strength goal), as well as goals from Jake Virtanen and Tim Schaller to secure the victory 5-2.

In Nashville the Predators look to feast on the Anaheim Ducks, and the first period would look good for the Predators as Roman Josi would score on the powerplay followed by a Colton Sissons tally to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.  Then in the second period the Predators would score two more goals as Rocco Grimaldi and Mattias Ekholm (SHG) would get on the board to expand the lead to four. Then in the third period the ducks would finally get on the board as Ryan Getzlaf would score his third of season, but the Predators would with two more goals as Viktor Arvidsson and Calle Jarnkrok would tally to give the Predators the 6-1 victory.

Then in the second period the two teams would trade goals again as Kurtis MacDermid would score for the Kings, and Nikolaj Ehlers would respond for the Jets. Then in the third period Anze Kopitar would score the lone goal of the period to give the Kings the 3-2 victory.

In Chicago the Blackhawks would host the Vegas Golden Knights, and in the first period Kirby Dach would score his first career NHL goal in his second career game to give the Blackhawks the 1-0 lead.   • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Anaheim Ducks forward Nick Ritchie has been fined $4,121.86, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for roughing Buffalo Sabres forward Vladimir Sobotka on Wednesday, October 16th.

 

  • The NHL announced that Vegas Golden Knights forward Valentin Zykov has been suspended for 20 games, without pay, for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program.

 

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that forward John Tavares will miss a minimum of two weeks due to a broken finger. Tavares will be reassessed in two weeks by the Leaf’s medical staff.

 

NWHL News:

  • The Connecticut Whale has announced that they have signed forward Haley Payne.

  • Payne was a member of Sacred Heart University, and she scored 32 goals and 27 assists for 59 points in 117 games with the Pioneers. Payne is expected to join the Whale this weekend when they make their trip to Buffalo to take on the Beauts.

 

  • The NWHL announced that ROCKET SPORT, the maker of the Rocket Dryer, has become an official sponsor of the NWHL.

After going through a scoreless overtime the shootout would be required, and it would be a goal by Jonathan Marchessault in the fifth round to secure the 3-2 victory for the Golden Knights.

Then the Sabres would shut things down as they would keep the Kings off the scoreboard and shut out the Kings 3-0.
