After much speculation, on Thursday, July 2nd, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has signed a one year incentive laden deal to return for his 22nd NHL season. Ovechkin would make the announcement
Ovechkin, 40, played in all 82 games during the 2025-26 season where he recorded 32 goals and 32 assists for 64 points. The season also marked a difficult one for Ovechkin as the Capitals saw both longtime defenseman John Carlson, who spent 17 years with the team, and center Nic Dowd traded to Anaheim and Vegas respectively that put a cloud over the team during the trade deadline.
After barely missing the playoffs, Ovechkin was not fully sold that he had played his last NHL game, but the uncertainty still surrounded him.
“To be honest, I’m pretty sure it’s not my last game. I hope it’s not my last game against Columbus,” Ovechkin said on April 16th at his final media availability for the 2025-26 season. “How I said, I have to make a decision, see where we are.”
For Capitals management, they took a more hands off approach.
“We could have met with him the day after the season ended. I don’t think he was ready at that point to have that conversation. I think he needs to take some time and just get away from it, right?” Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said on April 20th during his final media availability for the 2025-26 season. “Like, he just played 82 games in a really hard season. Just have a few days with his family and kind of veg out a little bit, and then you can start thinking about what the future holds.”

With the acquisitions of forwards Jordan Kyrou from St. Louis and Alex Tuch from Buffalo has greatly improved the Capitals forward corps with a pair of proven 30-goal scorers, along with the signings of forward Boone Jenner and defenseman Vincent Desharnais, it acted as an incentive for Ovechkin to return for another season as the Capitals aim to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and contend for their second Stanley Cup in franchise history.
“I’m back!” said Ovechkin in a statement released by the team. “Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I’m healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win. I’m excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win. See you in September, DC!”
For Ovechkin, he’ll be entering the 2026-27 season with 929 goals, 71 from 1000, and 758 assists for 1,687 points in 1,573 games played. For milestones, Ovechkin is 27 games from 1,600 career NHL games and 13 points from reaching 1,700 career NHL points.
“We are excited to have Alex return and continue his illustrious career,” said MSE founder and chairman Ted Leonsis. “Ever since we drafted him, there have been two constants: his love for the game and his relentless drive to win. Alex has always shown a deep commitment to his teammates, this organization, and the fans who have supported him throughout his career. I am incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished in a Capitals sweater, and I have no doubt he will continue to add to that legacy next season. He has defined excellence for this franchise and set a standard, and we are thrilled to have him continue writing this next chapter of his remarkable career. As we look ahead to next season, we are incredibly excited about the work our hockey operations group accomplished this summer to position our team to compete for a playoff berth and contend for the Stanley Cup. Our fans expect nothing less, and our organization has made the investments and difficult decisions necessary to build a new and exciting team. Having the greatest goal scorer in NHL history and the most important player in Capitals history return for another season means so much to our organization, our fans, and our city.”

“Our entire organization is thrilled that Alex has decided to continue playing,” said Capitals general manager Chris Patrick. “Alex has proven year after year that he can produce offensively and that he is still the driving force of our team. We are excited about the additions we made this offseason to bolster our lineup and make our group more competitive. We believe that our roster is well balanced and will help create more opportunities for Alex to create offense and score goals. In addition, his presence in our locker room – especially with our young players – will continue to be an enormous boost for our organization and will help shape our team culture for years to come.”
Ovechkin will earn $1 million in salary. His deal includes a $4.75 million games-played bonus (10 games) and a $3.25 million signing bonus. Ovechkin’s contract will carry an average annual value (AAV) of $4.25 million. The games-played bonus will be rolled over to the 2027-28 salary cap if reached.
