2025-26 Preview
Looking for the Three-peat
For the Minnesota Frost, they will look to become the first and only 3-time Walter Cup champions in the PWHL, but they’re going to have to do it with some changes to their lineup. The Frost lost six players to the expansion Vancouver Goldeneyes as forwards Brooke McQuigge, Michela Cava, and Denisa Krizova, and defenders Mellissa Channell-Watkins, Sophie Jaques, and Claire Thompson all were selected or signed with the Goldeneyes. Losing six key players to expansion, especially a top pairing defense pair in Jaques and Thompson, is a big blow to the Frost.
Also, for the Frost, their ability to win games going down the stretch after extended breaks, in this season’s case an Olympic Break, will also be critical for the Frost. For the first two seasons of the PWHL’s existence, the Frost have always struggled coming out the Women’s World Championship break, and always squeaking by to get into the playoffs. With the additions of Vancouver and Seattle this season, that may not be doable for the Frost this season. They’ll need to come out of the Olympic Break strong if they hope to make the playoffs and truly contend for a third consecutive Walter Cup, otherwise, we’ll be seeing a new Walter Cup champion instead.
