Washington Capitals (6-3-0 12pts) v. Dallas Stars (5-3-1 11pts)
Game Recap:
In Dallas for the Frozen Frenzy, the Washington Capitals would visit the Stars, and after going through split screen hell on ESPN due to the Philadelphia/Pittsburgh game bringing the chaos, we’d catch up with the Capitals and Stars midway through the first period still scoreless. For the Capitals, they would get the first powerplay of the game as Sam Steel would be called for tripping. Just like many other nights, the Capitals powerplay looked awful as the Stars successfully killed off the penalty. Moments later, Tom Wilson would be called for interreference to give the stars their first powerplay opportunity, but the Stars would not capitalize on it, but Aliaksei Protas would take a hooking penalty to put the Stars back on the powerplay. On the second powerplay, the Stars would get a fortunate bounce, but Logan Thompson would stop Tyler Seguin’s golden chance to keep the game scoreless. The Capitals would kill the penalty, and take the game into the first intermission still scoreless.
In the second period, Tom Wilson would be called for hooking, which looked like embellishment on Radek Faksa’s part, to give the Stars their third powerplay of the game. Unfortunately for the Capitals, the third time was the charm for the Stars as Tyler Seguin would score 43 second into the period to give the Stars the 1-0 lead. Then less than a minute later, Sam Steel would be called for holding to give the Capitals their second chance at the powerplay, and once again, the Capitals would not sustain any real pressure or zone time with the man advantage. The Capitals third line of Hendrix Lapierre, Ethen Frank, and Anthony Beauvillier would generate some really good sustained pressure that would see Lapierre generate some scoring chances along with Declan Chisholm. The Capitals would continue to surge a bit as they would generate more scoring chances, but Jake Oettinger would be up to the task to keep the Capitals off the board. The second period would end with the Stars up 1-0.
Then in the third period, The Capitals penalty woes would continue as Brandon Duhaime would be called for tripping, and Logan Thompson would make a huge save, and first one in 23 minutes, to keep the Capitals in the game. Later in the period, the Stars would have an amazing opportunity to grow their lead to two, but both Nic Dowd and Logan Thompson would keep the Stars at bay and the Capitals in the game. The Capitals would continue to generate chances but Pierre-Luc Dubois would hit the team’s third post of the game, but an interference call on Lian Bischel would give the Capitals the late powerplay opportunity, and the Capitals would see some chances, but once again, they would fail to score on the powerplay. With 1:38 left in regulation, the Capitals would pull Thompson for the extra attacker, but they would not be able to get one past Oettinger as the Stars would hold on for the 1-0 victory over the Capitals.
