2025-26 Preview
Looking for a Reboot in the Rebuild
For the Philadelphia Flyers, they are hitting the restart button on their rebuild, but not in a way one would think. The reboot button that the Flyers are hitting is solely behind the bench. Near the end of the season, the Flyers relieved John Tortorella as head coach and finished the season with Brad Shaw as interim head coach. Then in the offseason the Flyers got their man as Rick Tocchet was named head coach.
However, will Tocchet be the answer long term? He hasn’t truly won anything as a head coach. Despite one first place finish in the Pacific Division, that also earned him the Jack Adams award in 2024, Tocchet has only made the playoffs twice as a coach and holds an 11-11 record. Averaging a fifth place finish most seasons with the teams he’s coached, Tocchet may be good for getting the Flyers back to the playoffs, but he may not be the guy that gets them to the eventual promised land of another Stanley Cup.
While sticking to the plan of the rebuild already put in place, the hiring of Tocchet is still viewed as a correcting of the team’s course after the shortcomings that they’ve had the last two seasons.

Putting the Pieces Together
For general manager Daniel Briere, the offseason was also a chance to do some minor retooling to the lineup. Making a splash with the acquisition of Trevor Zegras in a trade with Anaheim, the Flyers added some more youth and playmaking to their middle six. Additionally, the Flyers brought a veteran presence to the net with the signing of goaltender Dan Vladar to backup Samuel Ersson. Also, the signing of Christian Dvorak will add some more stability down the middle for the Flyers.
While these moves won’t fully move the needle for the Flyers, they are the right moves to make to fill some holes, and continue the path that was set forth as part of their rebuild.
